About Riddle & Finns The Lanes

In Brighton, Riddle & Finns The Lanes is a seafood restaurant at 12b Meeting House Ln, where the kitchen is open to the dining room and the tables are topped with marble. Crab comes in the shell, so guests deshell it themselves at the table. Oysters share the menu with a 1kg line-caught sea bass, caught by pole and line. Small plates and starters are meant for sharing, and a warm seafood platter serves the same purpose for a larger table. The specials change weekly, and a cocktail list sits alongside the food. Candles are set in the dining room. The restaurant is open daily.

Customer Review Summary

Oysters are the most repeated draw, with one reviewer calling theirs possibly the best ever and another praising a signature oyster. Close behind are the sea bass shared whole, the sea bream, a halibut special with piri piri sauce, and a seafood linguine, while the cocktails and a spiced Bloody Mary get a mention too. Service earns steady praise: servers explain the fish, offer recommendations, and look after families and anniversary diners. Reviewers also like the open kitchen and the lively yet relaxed room. The complaints are few but specific. One reviewer says staff refused a request to sit opposite each other despite many empty tables. Another found the cutlery and cups still had food residue from earlier use. One warns that deshelling the crab takes effort, though the server explained this beforehand. One diner calls the prices reasonable for the quality, and a returning couple has marked their anniversary here since 2023.

“My girlfriend and I had an incredible meal at Riddle & Finns The Lanes. From the moment we arrived, the service was outstanding. Our waiter was exceptionally knowledgeable, taking the time to explain the different fish and answer our questions, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. We shared the 1kg line-caught, pole-and-line sea bass, and it was absolutely sensational. It was perfectly cooked, incredibly fresh, and without a doubt one of the best confit to compliment the fish. You could really taste the quality and care that went into preparing it. The atmosphere in The Lanes was lively yet intimate, making it the perfect setting for a special meal. Combined with the exceptional food and first-class service, this is probably one of the best seafood restaurants we’ve ever visited - considering my girlfriend is pescatarian and a bit of a fresh fish snob. We thoroughly enjoyed every minute and can’t wait to come back. Highly recommended! And special thanks to Nancy - our waitress - who catered to our every need with a smile. As well as the waiter - didn’t catch his name - no pun intended… who was great!”

“I went last evening to the lane restaurant with my family and we had an amazing time with delicious meals. We tried one of the specials dishes of the week (halibut with a piri piri sauce) recommended by Fred our waiter which was really tasty and the sea bream was also amazingly cooked. I fully recommend this place for everyone who loves seafood dishes. Really good service and quality!”

“My partner and I went here last night and it did not disappoint!! The staff were so attentive and friendly and gave us brilliant recommendations throughout the evening. All of the food tasted incredibly fresh and delicious... we didn't leave a single thing on our plates! We ended up ordering small plates all night because there were so many things we wanted to try and every dish was so good. I'm not sure why there are any bad reviews on here. I found the food to be reasonably priced for the quality of both the food and service. If you don't agree, then you probably don't go out much or understand that eating at a nice restaurant generally costs more these days. Oh and the cocktails were amazing. I could have happily had those all night. We can't wait to come back and work our way through more of the menu. Thank you!”

“Are you looking for a seafood restaurant? Look no more! Here is a hidden gem with ample indoor seating and a small 4 seater terrace neighbouring the path to the old town. We enjoyed a Bloody Mary, spiced with some chilli flakes and a signature oyster (to die for!) accompanied with a divine seafood linguine, and baby gems. The sea bream filet with samphires, pesto sauce, and fries did not disappoint. We enjoyed the vibrant service, the terraced seating and the relaxed atmosphere on the Bank Holiday. Must try!”

“Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing. We asked to be seated opposite each other, which is a very simple and reasonable request, especially considering that the restaurant had plenty of empty tables available at the time. However, the staff refused to accommodate this without any clear explanation. It made the experience feel unnecessarily uncomfortable and unwelcoming. The food may be fine, but the way guests are treated matters just as much. For that reason, I cannot leave a positive review.”
