About China Garden
China Garden is a Chinese restaurant in Brighton on Preston St, where a live piano player accompanies evening meals. The kitchen cooks Cantonese food and serves dim sum through the afternoon. Customer Review Summary
Diners most often return for the Cantonese duck, described as crispy and tender, with the sharing platters close behind, particularly the crispy seaweed and ribs. Reviewers also single out the crispy pork, beef in black bean sauce and sweet and sour chicken, plus tea served throughout the meal. Food arriving quickly, even in a packed room, comes up repeatedly, and staff are called friendly, with one party noting help for allergies and space for a baby. A live piano adds to the atmosphere for several. The main complaints concern value. One reviewer found the portions small for the price and left still hungry, another said service was slow to start before the food came promptly. The sharpest criticism came from a late lunch visitor who was given no dim sum menu, was sold leftover dim sum at a high price per piece, and said it tasted frozen, with a mixed meat hofun that had curry powder and a small portion. One reviewer says the staff even found a vase for their flowers.

“Such amazing service and stunning food. Great spot for a family dinner. All staff really ensured they met our expectations as some people had food allergies along with ensuring space with a small baby. Thank you so much!!”

“Walked in on a Saturday night and weee lucky to get a table. The food was tasty (and hot), but I felt it was expensive for the portion sizes that you receive. We were still hungry when we left. There was a great piano player and that really added to the atmosphere. The service was slow to start with and we felt as though we were being ignored, but then the food arrived promptly and the service was friendly.”

“Wasn’t given a dim sum menu but got sold some left over dim sum as we visited after usual lunch hour so just ordered what the waiter recommended, only to find out that each dim sum was £8 each when we received the bill. I’d expect those to be handmade but they all tasted like the frozen ones from supermarket. I’d be shocked if anyone would accept those as “dim sum”. The mixed meat hofun was so poor (with curry powder ?!) never mind the small portion because we couldn’t finish it anyway….”

“We had the most amazing time at China Garden with a warm and welcoming service from the get go. They even went the extra mile to get a vase for my flowers. We enjoyed both the veg and non veg sharing platters which were bursting with flavour and we were particularly impressed by the crispy seaweed and ribs. We had a selection of special rice and noodles which were fantastic on their own but complemented the meat dishes very well too. The crispy pork was cooked to perfection. The beef and black bean sauce melted into your mouth. The sweet and sour chicken was one of our favourites with an excellent balance of flavours. We were served tea throughout the meal which was delicious and allowed us to better digest our food and enjoy each bite. A must visit spot when in Brighton!”
