Customer Review Summary

Schnitzels draw the most praise, with reviewers singling out the Schnitzerella and describing the schnitzel as a trademark dish, often paired with black pudding bon bons, chicken satay, artichoke hearts, or a steak and venison pie. Diners call the food delicious and well presented, and the village green setting, beer garden and good choice of beers and ciders come up repeatedly. Most describe friendly, efficient staff and a mix of locals, families and visitors. Reviewers who raise problems focus on service and timing. One says the entrees took a long time to arrive, and another felt regulars were served and checked on first, found a staff member rude, and received a burger missing its bacon. That diner had the 12% service charge removed without any fuss. Another found the kitchen closed by mid-afternoon on a first visit and returned the next day. A few suggest reservations for weekends and for groups of four or more.

“We had a gorgeous meal here on Saturday night. All of the staff were really lovely, very attentive and we had lovely starters and main courses. A special shout out to the manager Huw who was so kind, an excellent host and made sure we got home safely late at night”

“Service Didn't Match the Quality of the Food, We visited The Red Lion after booking a table in advance. On arrival, we were greeted by a lady behind the bar who was friendly and served us two Orchard Pig ciders. When I asked where our reserved table was, she kindly showed us to it. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. After being seated, we waited to be served, but customers who appeared to be regulars and who arrived after us were served before us. We eventually had to ask if we could order our food, which wasn't a great start. The member of staff who took our order came across as rude and gave the impression she didn't want to be there. We ordered a burger and a schnitzel. The food arrived fairly quickly, was hot, well presented, and tasted nice. However, the burger was missing the bacon it was supposed to include. Due to the service we had received, we didn't feel comfortable saying anything at the time. What was also disappointing was that nobody came over to check whether everything was okay with our meals or if we needed anything else. Meanwhile, the customers who seemed to be regulars were checked on. It gave the impression that if you're not a local, you don't receive the same level of service. A simple check-in is basic customer service and would have given us the opportunity to mention the missing bacon. When it came to paying, a 12% service charge had been added to the bill. Given the service we'd received, I asked for it to be removed, which was done without any issue. However, nobody asked why or seemed interested in the feedback. It was just an awkward silence while the payment was processed. Overall, the food was the highlight of the visit hot, well presented, and enjoyable. Sadly, the service let the whole experience down, and because of that, we won't be returning.”

“Dropped in for a drink, after finishing a walk around the village (lovely place) We got a very good welcome from the staff, very pleasant. Good choice of beers, lagers and ciders- couldn't fault. Can't comment on the food, but looking around at the number of reserved tables, the place must be popular- it was late afternoon when we arrived. The inn has a good beer garden and additional tables outside - very nice in the sun. Very popular with the locals, who made us very welcome- so much we stayed for another drink! A really nice place, thanks to all”

“Wednesday 27.May. Exellent meal at The Red Lion. The pub stays open from lunch time. 12 to about 2.30 lunch. Starts food again at 6. We arrived about 5.30 the pub was already busy . I really nice evening, we ate in the garden. Black pudding Bon Bons as a starter followed by one of their trade mark Schnitzels for us both. A small menu but all very well cooked and presented. The staff are friendly and efficient, by 6.30 it was full inside and out with people eating and just out for a drink. A large cross section of customers. Families, young people from the local F1 team and locals from the village. Great atmosphere. The pub sits on the edge of the village green so you can often watch a game of cricket. An English pub just how it should be in a beautiful Northamptonshire village. Really pleased this business is thriving and showing it is possible to do well amongst all the doom and gloom when a business is run properly with enthusiastic staff.”
