About The Grand Junction

At 13 High St in Buckingham, The Grand Junction is a pub with an open theatre-style kitchen that turns out Neapolitan wood-fired pizza, and the bar has an open fireplace. The menu is Mediterranean-inspired and also covers traditional home comforts, with a specials pizza and gluten-free options for coeliacs. The team serves at the table rather than at the bar, and the drinks list runs to wines, cocktails and real ales. The Granary is a separate, smaller function room with its own bar and a party menu that includes pizzas, set up for groups holding private parties or business meetings. Brunches and quizzes run as regular events. Dogs are welcome in the main pub area.

Customer Review Summary

Pizza is the dish reviewers return to most, from the pizzas served at a private party to one a diner finished entirely and a specials pizza with a slightly wet base. Close behind are the mussels, butternut squash soup, porchetta and a cauliflower small plate described as a standout. Table service, friendly staff and a window seat also earn praise. Several say staff handled dietary needs, extra requests and an early arrival without fuss, and one family mentions birthday desserts. Food consistency draws the main complaints. One diner found a meal undercooked and bland with a sauce like coloured water, another disliked a Caesar salad with tough packet croutons and an apple and cinnamon pie with soft pastry, and a fillet steak came slightly overcooked. Fresh red chillies overwhelmed the small plates for one, and the party pizzas were too spicy for another. Cocktails were called watery with too much ice, and at one party a server cleared a three-quarters-full drink early, which had to be argued over before it was replaced.

“We’ve been visiting The Grand Junction for years now, and it’s somewhere we always enjoy returning to! The food has consistently been lovely, whether we’re eating in the restaurant or the bar area, and the service has always been excellent. The staff are genuinely warm, friendly and accommodating, and over the years have always been happy to cater to dietary requirements, including during my pregnancies. They’ve also made several birthday celebrations feel extra special with thoughtful birthday desserts, which has always been such a lovely touch. It’s a great place for families too, with highchairs and a children’s menu available. The toilets have always been clean and well maintained during our visits, with accessible toilet facilities and baby changing facilities available too. We also really appreciate that it’s dog friendly in the pub area, meaning we’ve been able to enjoy meals with friends and family who bring their dogs along. There’s a lovely outdoor seating area too, which is particularly nice when the weather is good. What really stands out to us is how consistently welcoming the whole experience has been over the years. Good food, lovely staff and a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. Whether it’s a family meal, a birthday celebration or simply popping in for something to eat, we’ve always had a positive experience. Would happily recommend The Grand Junction and look forward to many more visits!”

“Me and my husband came here with family to celebrate 🍾 our wedding and the service and food was impeccable to say the least… and second time we went just us 2 and again impeccable service and food… beautiful place and friendly staff too. It’s canny pricey but worth it in the end with freshly made food and all around great service.”

“I really did not enjoy the food here. The Cesar salad had packet croutons, which were tough, big crumbling and it had anchovies in it - yuk! I had the apple and cinnamon pie for dessert and they must have heated it in a microwave since the pastry was soft, not crispy at all. Surely a proper kitchen has better way of reheating pastry so it stays crispy?!”

“I have been to the Grand Junction twice with my wife and while the service was great both times and the atmosphere is really good, the overall experience is just let down by the food. On our last visit, the restaurant was very quiet so this can't be blamed on it being busy. My meal was undercooked and bland and the sauce may as well as have been coloured water. The layout and ambience says fine dining but the food is barely a step above just acceptable pub food. Will do in a pinch but I would avoid if you're expecting anything other than just filling a hole.”

“I attended this pub for a family member's leaving party before they travel around the world. It is a really nice, quite large venue with a great layout. They have the main pub on one side, an outdoor area, and a separate, smaller private function room/hut area on the other side, which worked perfectly for our private party. The Food:The pizzas provided as part of the private party menu were very nice! They were just a little bit too spicy for my personal taste, but still good quality. The Drinks:This was the main downside for me. The cocktails were far too watery and contained way too much ice. I was drinking them all night and didn't feel anything at all. On the positive side, the drinks are reasonably priced.Service:Most of the staff were very good, but one staff member in particular kept coming around and clearing away drinks prematurely. They shouldn't be snatching glasses away just because people aren't holding onto them. They even took my cousin's drink when it was still three-quarters full! We had to argue our case to get it replaced.Overall, it's a nice place with a great setup for events, but the drink quality and over-eager glass clearing definitely need improvement.”
