Quick info
About The Mary Shelley - JD Wetherspoon
The Mary Shelley is a pub in Bournemouth's Quadrant Centre, named after the author of Frankenstein. It sits opposite St Peter's church, where she is buried, so the name points to a real local connection. Food and drink follow the standard Wetherspoon menu, and real ales are part of the drinks list. Breakfast is served, including a breakfast muffin with eggs. The pub is large and divided into several sections, some busier and some more private. Seating is walk-in. A quiz night runs on Thursdays.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the value of the standard Wetherspoons menu, with breakfast as the clearest draw. One praises the eggs in the muffin, and another calls it a quick breakfast stop that works for a family of five. Meals are described as coming out fast, and several call the staff friendly and welcoming. A visiting parent and daughter found the Thursday quiz night a lot of fun, and another guest mentions cheap drinks and music. Cleanliness and staffing split opinion sharply. One reviewer calls the toilets exceptionally clean with up-to-date hourly checks. Another reports no toilet paper or soap, puddles, and a smell of sewage, along with sticky tables and glasses with lipstick and food smears. A third says there are too few staff to clear tables, so previous customers' plates and glasses are left behind and waits grow when busy. One diner describes dirty cutlery and a wrong sauce, with a male manager arguing before fetching the right one, then onion rings that arrived overcooked and black.

“You can’t really go wrong with a Spoons to be fair. You know what you’re getting. It’s good quality with no frills. The Mary Shelley has great decor and a good community feel: my daughter and I went for breakfast while on holiday and saw the publicity for a Thursday night quiz night there so we went and it was a lot of fun! Toilets are not too labyrinthine either 😜😜😜 Also wanted to add that the eggs in the muffin were absolutely cracking (no pun intended!). Actually reminded me of what an egg should actually taste like! 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼”

“"Absolutely disgusting — this Spoons has hit rock bottom. Table was sticky with old drink, had to wipe it myself with a napkin that was already damp. Floor by the bar was literally swimming in spilled beer — nobody mopped it the whole hour we were there. Toilets? No toilet paper, no soap, puddles on the floor, smelled like sewage. And don't get me started on the glasses — mine had dried lipstick on the rim, swapped it and the next one had a smear of food on the side. Spoons are meant to be basic, not filthy. Never again." ⭐”

“Visited The Mary Shelley Wetherspoons while in Bournemouth and had a great experience. The food is exactly what you'd expect from Wetherspoons, great quality for the price and excellent value for money. But what really made this branch stand out was the staff. Everyone I interacted with was genuinely friendly, welcoming and attentive, It's always nice to be greeted with a smile and made to feel welcome. Credit to the whole team for their fantastic customer service. Thank you! I'll definitely be back next time I'm in Bournemouth!”
