Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the desserts, led by the chocolate fondant, called transcendent by one reviewer and excellent by another, with sticky toffee pudding and salted caramel cheesecake close behind. Among the mains, reviewers name the Bury Black Pudding starter topped with a poached egg, sea bass, the Lancashire cheese and onion pie, a Sunday roast topside of beef with a massive Yorkshire pudding, steak and ale pie, wood pigeon, and fillet steak and duck cooked perfectly. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and welcoming. The most common complaint is pace. Several say food was slow to arrive, and one table sat a long while before lunch came out, guessing the kitchen was short staffed. One reviewer found the sausages chewy and the soup portion small, another says staff helped only once given direct instruction, and one felt the room was not warm enough. Even so, one couple who enjoy not being asked how the food is mid mouthful have returned several times.

“Food is excellent 👌, we love the service as you don't get the usual how is your food question just as you take a mouthful and can't answer. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable when asked about the food or drinks on offer. We became aware of the restaurant earlier this year and have been back 5 times now. Will definitely be going again.”

“Lovely lunchtime meal. Lovely friendly and welcoming staff. Good choices. Great portion sizes. I had the Wood Pigeon followed by Fish 5 Chips. Both excellent. Highly recommended.”

“Another Sunday, another roast. This time at Goose & Gander in Blackrod, a great country pub in a beautiful setting. We did the sensible thing and earned it first with a Sunday stroll along the canal, which of course completely offsets everything that followed. The pub itself feels fresh, clean and full of energy. A lively spot, but still relaxed and welcoming. We went for the Roast Topside of Beef (£18.95) with roast potatoes, carrot and swede, steamed vegetables, Yorkshire pudding and veal jus. A very well presented roast, with perfectly cooked beef and a massive Yorkshire pudding that arrived like it owned the plate. Always a welcome sight. At £18.95, the roast itself feels well priced for the quality and setting. Naturally, restraint then left the building and we followed it up with hot chocolate fondant and sticky toffee pudding. Desserts are a little step up in price, with the fondant at £11, but the quality was excellent and I’d definitely order it again. A high-calorie day for sure, but some Sundays are about memories, not macros. Verdict: A cracking country pub roast in a lovely setting. Great quality food and ideal after a Sunday walk. 🍽️ Paying customer | Honest review”
