About Shinwari Dera
On Ladypool Rd in Birmingham, Shinwari Dera is an Afghan restaurant open daily at 358-360. The kitchen centres on lamb, with the Shinwari Lamb Charsi Karahi and charsi lamb chops as the main dishes. A lamb shoulder meal is also available, but it has to be ordered in advance. Mains come with large Afghan naan on the side, so the table has bread to share. The dining space is big, with curtained sections and family booths, and there is plenty of seating for large groups.

Customer Review Summary
Lamb charsi is the dish reviewers return to most. One calls the Shinwari lamb charsi karahi tender and full of flavour, while another found the charsi karahi a little off on a later visit. Close behind are the chapli kebabs and lamb chops, described as well-seasoned and full of flavour, along with the Kabuli pilau platter, chicken biryani, large fluffy naan and green tea. One reviewer says the lamb shoulder must be ordered in advance and arrived perfectly cooked. Portions are called generous, though one diner found the Shinwari Platter average in taste. Service splits. Several praise friendly, attentive staff, while one reports delays and a lack of attentiveness and says hygiene did not feel right. Another reports that the biryani smelled as if it had been sitting for days and that they had an upset stomach afterward. Reviewers repeatedly mention the large space for groups and families, especially the curtained booths that give privacy.

“Very disappointing experience at Shinwari Restaurant on Ladypool Road, Birmingham. I went with my family (4 people) and paid around £115 for the meal. Unfortunately, the food did not seem fresh. The rice/biryani tasted and smelled as if it had been sitting for several days. One portion of biryani that I opened at home was actually smelly, so I could not eat it. I also experienced an upset stomach after eating the food. I am very concerned about the food storage and hygiene standards. Health and safety authorities should check how the restaurant is storing its food, including the fridges and freezers, and whether food is being kept and served safely. For the price we paid, I expected fresh and safe food. I definitely did not have a good experience and would not recommend it based on my visit.”
