Customer Review Summary
Balti curries served in the dish they are cooked in draw the most praise, with reviewers singling out the Bhuna Chooza, a chicken tikka garlic balti, and a chilli garlic chicken masala balti as full of flavour. Close behind are the breads and sides: a special cheese naan described as light and fresh, a garlicky tarka dhal, a vegetable pilau, and a mega naan shared at the table. One regular always returns to the lasawalla gosht, while others praise the butter chicken at medium spice and a tasty dum biryani. Staff are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming, and several mention the bring your own booze arrangement. One family notes the children were given activity books. The main complaint comes from one diner who found service slow on a quiet Sunday night, with long waits to take drink orders and again for drinks and food, while staff chatted and used their mobile phones. A group celebrating a birthday finished with complimentary desserts.

“Came here due to a recommendation. We were slightly apprehensive due to the distance. The service from the minute we walked in, to being seated and the food! I can’t fault it at all! The children were kept entertained with some activity books while they waited. The hospitality was 10/10!!! Our waiter looked after us so well! Most importantly the food was DELICIOUS!! This will definitely we our new go to place!!! The sdistace was definitely worth it!!!”

“The best place for a curry in the UK! Came after a long session of football in hot weather so this hit the spot. Food is always fresh and quality ingredients. A special shoutout to Amo working at reception, waiter, and back in the kitchen. Working on his feet at all times with great customer service. If you come into the store ask for Amo. Cannot recommend enough. Family run business so if your in the area come down and see.”

“We’ve lived in Birmingham for years and somehow had never heard of this place, despite it being one of the city’s oldest Balti houses. We decided to take a chance tonight, and we’re so glad we did. We both had a curry, and you can really tell they’re cooked properly in the Balti dish they’re served in. I had the Bhuna Chooza, which was absolutely packed with flavour and easily one of the nicest curries I’ve had in a long time. We shared the special cheese naan, and honestly it’s the best naan I’ve ever eaten. It’s cooked differently to a standard naan and was so light, fresh and full of flavour. My husband ordered the tarka dhal as a side (he had the butter chicken as a main and it promised not your average and it wasn’t - so tasty and medium spice and really authentic). I’m not usually much of a dhal person, but I always give it a try… and I ended up eating more of it than he did! It was beautifully garlicky, with perfectly cooked lentils and so much flavour. The service was fantastic too the man that served us was so welcoming, friendly and genuinely seemed to care that we had a great meal. We’ll definitely be back, and next time we’ll be bringing friends. A proper Birmingham Balti that’s absolutely worth seeking out.”

“Read an article recently in the decline of Birmingham's authentic Balti restaurants. At its height there was ~200 but now only around 20 (most restaurants cook the curry normally and then transfer to the balti dish to serve apparently). So decided to go somewhere authentic as I hadn't had a proper one for many years and picked Royal Watan. Glad I did. It's a BYOB place, has an extensive list of Baltis and you can customise your own. Took me back to Uni days in Selly Oak at The Chapla. Will try a few more this year and see how they compare...”

“Quite literally one of, if not the best curry I've ever eaten! Had the Balti Chicken Masalla Chilli Garlic which was amazing, accompanied with the freshest vegetable pilau rice... Wow! Staff were great, atmosphere was good but quite because we went early, would definitely return and 100% recommended.”
