About Mandi House

Mandi House lays out its dining in two ways on Coventry Road in Birmingham, with traditional floor-seating rooms that suit families and larger groups, and separate table cubicles for smaller parties who want their own space. The kitchen works in the Yemeni mandi style, and lamb mandi and chicken mandi anchor the order sheet. Sharing platters are built for two or for four, so a group can eat from one centrepiece. Soup sits on the menu as a starter in its own right rather than a complimentary extra. The restaurant has been refurbished recently, and the space itself is small, so reserving ahead is advised. Service is eat-in, and diners can carry leftovers home from the generous plates. The doors open daily.

Customer Review Summary

The lamb mandi is the dish reviewers name most, and opinion on it splits sharply. Some find plenty of flavour in it and call the food fresh and delicious, one regular listing a platter for four, tandoori seabass with naan and salad, and tea across a single meal. Close behind sit the private booths and cubicles, liked for privacy though described as a little tight, and a recent refurbishment several say looks better than before. Against that runs a steady line of freshness and value complaints: mandi rice arriving cold and tasteless, a fahasah called bland, chewy kebabs in the mix grill, chicken smaller than expected, and soup charged for where other Yemeni places gave it free. Two describe meat that smelled or tasted off, one reviewer reports stomach pain afterwards, and another says the room did not feel clean. A couple also say they were billed well above the figures on the online menu. One diner who raised a freshness concern describes being told flatly the chicken was fresh, then paying in full with no apology.

“We came to Mandi House and ordered the platter for two. Unfortunately, both the chicken and the meat had a bad smell and tasted like they had gone off. We only ate a few bites of the rice before telling the staff straight away that the meat and chicken didn't seem fresh. The staff member who spoke to us was very rude and kept insisting, "Wallahi, the chicken is fresh," instead of listening to our concerns. There was no apology or attempt to resolve the situation. Even though we barely ate any of the food, we still paid the full bill because we didn't want to cause a scene. However, we would have appreciated at least an apology and a more professional response. It's disappointing to be treated this way when raising a genuine concern about food quality. Sadly, based on this experience, we won't be returning.”

“Very bad experience at Mandi House. We ordered lamb mandi, but the meat was not fresh at all. I honestly think it was beef instead of lamb. After eating, I got stomach pain. I have eaten mandi before from a Syrian restaurant on Coventry Road near this place, and their mandi is always fresh and very tasty. Unfortunately, Mandi House was completely disappointing.”

“Very shocking food £50-60 I felt scammed. Go elsewhere. I don’t understand how people are paying so much forsomething that doesn’t reflect its price. This isn’t London. With that price the food was cold or warm, i don’t believe it was fresh maybe left out from the previous day. Surprising how there are many good reviews. Reminds me of one of the earlier review photos. I knew I couldn’t have been the only one who felt sca mmed. It should be £20. The food didn’t taste yemeni. probably somali. I have not posted a review before. I didn’t feel clean inside the restaurant. Truthfully I didn’t enjoy the food. I won’t pay them again.”

“The most ancient and historic Arab cuisine of Yemen, where fragrant meat and rice carry the taste of centuries.”

“Our MOST favourite of ALL restaurants ever ❤️ it might be small and not be much to look at but the food is amazing. They have done a recent refurbishment but some clientèle don't help to keep it nice unfortunately. Anyway we ordered: 4 meat soup, a plater for 4 (£49.99), 2 tandoori seabass (come with naan & salad) (£10.99 per fish), 4 cans of drinks, and 3 teas and it came to a total of £76.50 but we had half the plater and 1 seabass left over which we bought home with us. They have 2 on the floor sitting family/groups and 2 table sitting rooms/cubicles”
