About Indian Cafe Racer

Indian Cafe Racer is an Indian restaurant in Birmingham, set inside The Duke of Wellington pub at 88-90 Bristol St. The dining room sits to the side of the main bar, and signs outside the pub point to the restaurant. A real café racer motorcycle is on display inside, which ties the room to the restaurant's name, and incense is used in the dining room. The menu runs from butter chicken to tandoori lamb served with raita and naan, and vegetarian dishes are marked with a V. Ras malai is on the dessert list, and a cocktail list sits alongside the food. The restaurant is open daily.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often point to flavourful, tender lamb, from the smoked lamb curry wrap and spiced lamb chops to a lamb tandoori served with raita and naan. Close behind are the tandoori king prawns, the butter chicken, and a biryani one diner calls one of the best of their life. The dahi puri, red mullet starter, and ras malai are also singled out, along with vegetarian dishes, the chai, and the cocktails. Service is described repeatedly as friendly and attentive, with staff wiping tables, topping up water, and suggesting drink pairings. Diners describe a relaxed room that mixes English pub and Indian touches, including incense and a real Cafe Racer. The complaints are small. One reviewer found the fried dough served with the poppadoms stale and thought portions slightly small. Several visits were birthday celebrations. At one, the team brought prosecco and gulab jamun to the table, and another party that had to dash off had all their food boxed.

“Really enjoyed my visit to Indian Cafe Racer. The food was full of flavour and everything was really well cooked. The tandoori king prawns were really good, and the dahi puri was especially nice. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere had a great vibe. Definitely a place I’d come back to again when I’m in Birmingham.”

“Arriving in Birmingham after being stuck on a long delayed train, I felt like going for something to eat. Talking to the excellent staff at the record store The Diskery, I was recommended a place that I had not heard of before. Situated within The Duke of Wellington Hotel & Bar pub ( there are a number of signs outside the pub for Café Racer. ) The restaurant is to the side of the main bar. The restaurant has a large dining room. The room features a mix of single and large tables for groups. From the framed football t-shirt and signed cricket bat mounted on the wall of the entrance, the location has a wonderful, refined appearance. From when I originally went, the staff have been absolutely fantastic. Along with being very friendly, the staff have also come up with great suggestions for what to pair the food with. The menu features a very good selection of soft drinks, beers, wines and spirits. Since my first visit, the food has been absolutely splendid. From delicious Vegan and South Indian fish curries, to Spiced Lamb Chops all being served in terrific portions and packed with flavour. Due to having an event to attend, on this occasion, I went for a Smoked Lamb Curry Wrap. The lamb was incredibly tender with subtle smoky notes. The smell and taste of the wraps was extremely aromatic with a lingering spicy aftertaste. Taking the last bite, I set off to see the Australian band Atticus Chimps, with a new spice for life.”

“Great indian food! Too much good stuff to choose from. Started with a Papi mix, great chudney’s. Had the Lamb tandori which was very tender and flavorfull, with Raita and Nan tandori. Staff is very kind and helpful. Bit of a mix between an English pub and Indian vibes”

We are so pleased we stumbled across this little gem. Now we just need an excuse to come back to Birmingham so we can eat here again.”
