About The Refreshment Rooms
The Refreshment Rooms is a restaurant in Birkenhead, at 2 Bedford Rd E, beside the Rock Ferry slipway on the River Mersey. It reopened in June 2012 in the former Admiral pub, taking back the name of the original 1880s Mersey ferry Refreshment Rooms. The interior reuses pieces from other buildings: a chandelier from the Cunard building, light fittings from the Adelphi Hotel and Lewis's of Liverpool, and a solid mahogany bar top that began in the science block of Wirral Grammar School. Period photos of the area from the 19th and early 20th centuries cover the walls. The menu is large and varied, with a wide choice of drinks, a gluten-free selection and vegan starters and other vegan options. The restaurant is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Food that reviewers call delicious and well above standard pub fare is the main draw. The taco platter with its fresh garnishes is singled out as a highlight, the mussel pot is described as cooked perfectly, and the steak and ale pie and coca cola ribs are praised. Reviewers also mention a strong gluten-free and vegan selection, stone baked pizzas in the beer garden at weekends, and cask ales. Several describe the setting as full of character, with distinct dining rooms and period pieces, and the waiting staff as friendly, quick and attentive, including toward a baby. Diners also call the prices fair for the quality. The criticisms are specific. One reviewer found the desserts a letdown, described a server banging drinks down without a word, and noted another staff member dropping things repeatedly. A second diner reports a fungi-like smell beside their seat and asks for the seating to be sanitised. The first reviewer also asked for knives and spoons to be changed because they were dirty, and the replacements were not much better.

“Really loved this place, I think the atmosphere was great and the food looked exquisite, I had a great birthday. I especially loved how you could buy all the pictures on the wall of chairs, how did they even take those!? The only way I could imagine ever getting a picture like that for myself is to purchase those images off of the wall. However, whilst I was enjoying my food, there was this strange smell reminiscent of fungi emanating next to me. This soiled my eating experience. Im not sure what caused it but if the refreshment rooms could please address this and maybe thoroughly sanitise the seats(you really should) i think this could be a 5 star review.”

“We enjoyed the food, the steak and ale pie and the coca cola ribs were especially good, but the desserts were a bit of a letdown. The place was quite busy and a little noisy, one of the staff kept dropping things, this was quite annoying, in the two hours that we were there she dropped things at least a half dozen times. Speaking of staff there was one in particular that was so miserable, almost to the point of being rude, just brought drinks and banged them down on the table without saying a word. One complaint that I would have is the cutlery was dirty, we asked for changes to a few knifes and spoons due to them not being clean, but the replacement wasn't much better. Overall the starters and the mains were good, the desserts I will skip next time and I would hope that they pay more attention to the cleanliness of the cutlery.”

“Amazing Gastro Bar and Restaurant. The finest dining experience that I know of in the area, the Service is quick polite and friendly. Cask ales and craft Beers. A beautiful back a front beer garden that does stone baked pizzas on the weekend. One couldn't ask for anymore. Further more a wide range of entertainment such as Morris dancing 🕺 😅. Reassuringly expensive! However in this case worth every penny.”

“We had a fantastic time dining here. Every dish was prepared with real care and presented beautifully. The highlight was definitely the taco platter, which was served with such vibrant, fresh garnishes. The mussel pot was equally impressive and cooked perfectly. Everything we tasted was delicious. We will certainly be back again soon.”

“My partner, family and I recently visited for a catch-up meal, and after an 8-year gap, we realised we were well overdue a return visit. From the moment we arrived, the service was excellent. We were seated at Table 47 and looked after by three lovely members of staff – Holly D, Chloe, and a third lady whose name unfortunately escapes me. With my surname and table number, I'm sure you'll be able to identify her. The service throughout was efficient, friendly and attentive. Drinks were checked regularly and topped up promptly, which was greatly appreciated. The food was absolutely delicious, and everyone in our group commented on how much they enjoyed their meals. We were seated in the new extension, which is a fantastic addition and provided a lovely setting for our meal. I would particularly like to praise the staff for their warm, friendly and personable approach. Great customer service, delivered with a smile, a sense of humour and genuine friendliness, really makes all the difference and adds so much to the overall experience. Thank you to everyone involved. We're very glad we chose The Refreshment Rooms for our family get-together and will certainly be returning. I would have no hesitation in highly recommending to others.”

“The former Admiral pub on the Rock Ferry waterfront reopened as as a restaurant after lying neglected for 5 years in June 2012, under its original name Refreshment Rooms. It was the original Refreshment Rooms for the cross-Mersey ferry in the 1880s. Over the past 14 years or so we have forged a great reputation for good home cooked food at remarkable value for money prices. The space is light and airy with many original features enhanced by the installation of a chandelier from the Cunard building, light fittings from the Adelphi Hotel and Lewis’s of Liverpool and a solid mahogany bar top which started life in the science block of Wirral Grammar School. The walls are full of period photos of the area in the 19th and early 20th centuries.”
