About Manifest Restaurant

Manifest Restaurant is a modern European restaurant at 4a Watkinson St in Liverpool, built around counter seating at the chef's table. Chefs prepare each dish in front of guests and talk them through what they are cooking. The set tasting menu includes a 7-course chef's choice, with an optional wine pairing for those who want one. Housemade salt and vinegar crisps arrive still warm, and the pudding is ginger and clementine with puff pastry. Wine is also poured on draught. The restaurant opens Wednesday to Saturday and closes Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays. Booking is needed.

Customer Review Summary

Seats at the chefs table, where diners watch the kitchen work and chat with the cooks about each dish, are what most reviewers return to. Of the food, the ginger and clementine pudding is named most often, with the still warm salt and vinegar crisps, the duck, the baby leek and Blacksticks Blue velouté, the trout starter, the cod main, the beef tartare and the poached oysters close behind. Reviewers also praise the wine on draught, the cocktail recommendations and the local brewery beers, and several describe the server as warm and knowledgeable about wine and cheese. Complaints are few. One diner found the cheese selection a let-down, another did not enjoy the wine pairing because the flavour profiles were too different from what they are used to, and a couple call it pricey for a restaurant without a Michelin star, though others call the tasting menu reasonably priced. Several came for birthdays, and one family found a handwritten card from the chefs on the table, while their son ate fish and mushrooms for the first time.

“We had a great evening here. We sat at the counter and loved watching the chefs prepare every dish with such care—the food was absolutely delicious. Interesting wine list. The staff were friendly and attentive. The atmosphere was buzzy, making it the perfect spot for a weekend night out. Booking a table is necessary but they said they do sometimes have counter seats available for walk-ins. I highly recommend this restaurant!”

“Outstanding! We had a wonderful evening here for a birthday treat. The service was attentive, knowledgeable and friendly. All of the food was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. We sat at the chef's table and really enjoyed seeing the food being prepared. The wine on draught was a really clever idea and was a great accompaniment to our meal. We can't wait to return when we have another special occasion.”

“Another fantastic night at Manifest. This restaurant oozes class but without pretensions, exquisite food thoughtfully devised and meticulously prepared, and a disarmingly charming welcome from Tom; we’ll be back for a third visit soon.”

“Here for the 7 course chefs choice plus an additional cheese course and beers supplied by the local brewery Black Lodge. Everything was faultless and the 2+3/4 hrs flew by. Would certainly recommend this restaurant.”

“Let me start with Tom, our server: a lover of food himself, and someone who could make you taste the dishes through his words, so that you could make a conscious choice from the menu. Now, the food. We were a party of three, there to celebrate my son’s birthday, so we had the chance to try a good portion of the menu. From the puddings, we tried all three, and our favourite was the ginger, clementine and puff pastry. In fact, after finishing it, we asked for the sauce that was poured over it to be served on its own! From the snacks, the “still warm” salt and vinegar crisps were wonderful: a large bowl of freshly cut, freshly cooked crisps, unlike anything I have experienced elsewhere. Amazingly, the price was comparable to chips from a fast-food place. From the small plates, the baby leek, Blacksticks Blue velouté and sage was exceptional. If there is a heaven where food is served, this should be on the menu. From the large plates, the duck was a revelation. Believe me, I had tried several times in the past to fall in love with duck and had always failed. I do not know; perhaps what I had previously eaten was fake duck, if this was what duck can really be. I am sorry to say, however, that the cheese was a let-down for us. To be fair, none of us are really into cheese, but the selection did not wow us. They had also placed a lovely card on the table from the founding chefs and the team, congratulating my son on his birthday. That was a very nice gesture, and of course it could have been even better with a pudding on the house :) They also gave my son an unplanned gift, though one that did not make my wife entirely happy — and she is herself a brilliant cook. At home, our son never eats fish or mushrooms, always saying that he does not like them. At Manifest, he had both, and then said, “Ah, so this is what they taste like.” As for his mum’s reaction, I will leave you to guess :) Overall, a rather expensive, but deeply satisfactory and unforgettable experience.”
