Customer Review Summary

Reviewers single out quick service, one being served straight away in an empty bar, and bar staff described as lovely and down to earth. The sharpest complaint is a dismissive manager who, after a machine failed to credit a note, left the refund waiting and handed it over curtly. Another reviewer reports a cracked toilet in the ladies.

“This afternoon, a friend and I went into Beverley for a catch-up and a few drinks. We spent the majority of our afternoon in The Beaver and, initially, we had a genuinely enjoyable time. The atmosphere was good, the prices were reasonable and the music was great, so we had absolutely no complaints. Unfortunately, the experience was completely ruined by the way a very simple issue was handled. I went to put a £5 note into one of the bandit machines, but the machine didn’t accept it and the money didn’t appear as credit. Obviously, these things happen and we completely understood that it wasn’t the fault of the bar staff. We spoke to a member of staff, who was lovely, apologised and said they would speak to the person in charge. We then discovered that the person in charge was actually sitting right next to us, drinking and having a laugh with his friends. We hadn’t realised he was the manager/owner at first. When the bar staff explained what had happened, his response was absolutely appalling. He said something along the lines of “as if we would rob them off a fiver”, while we were literally sitting right next to him. Nobody had accused anyone of stealing anything. We simply wanted the £5 returned because the machine hadn’t credited it. The comment was completely unnecessary, condescending and incredibly dismissive, particularly considering we were paying customers who had spent the afternoon in the pub. He then said he would sort it “in a minute”. That “minute” turned into roughly half an hour. During that entire time, he continued drinking, laughing and chatting with his mates, showing absolutely no urgency whatsoever. Meanwhile, we were waiting around because we had a train to catch and were already getting pushed for time. Eventually, the £5 was returned, but rather than simply apologising for the delay or acknowledging what had happened, it was slammed into my friend’s hand as though returning our own money was some enormous inconvenience to him. The £5 itself was never the issue. We completely understand that machines malfunction and mistakes happen. What was disappointing was the attitude from someone who was apparently in charge of the establishment. The bar staff were genuinely lovely and did everything they could, so this isn’t a criticism of them whatsoever. In fact, they were much more professional and respectful than the person supposedly responsible for the place. It’s incredibly disappointing when a small problem that could have been resolved in 30 seconds is turned into an unpleasant experience simply because someone can’t be bothered to deal with it properly. Being a manager/owner comes with a responsibility to treat both customers and staff with basic respect, and unfortunately that wasn’t what we experienced. We left feeling completely dismissed and uncomfortable. It wasn’t the missing £5 — it was the attitude, the unnecessary comment, the half-hour wait and the way the money was eventually handed back to us. We had actually been having a lovely afternoon and would have happily returned, but after seeing how customers and staff were treated over such a minor issue, I certainly won’t be rushing back. A good atmosphere and decent prices don’t make up for being made to feel like an inconvenience when you’re simply asking for your own money back On a positive note, the bar staff were lovely and down to earth, the lad in the day time new our orders straight away and felt like a regular, made us feel very welcome, thanks for the good day!”

“This toilet needs fixing before it seriously injures someone, cracked porcelain toilets are extremely dangerous. Ladies toilets right hand side. Happy to edit this review when this has been fixed. Otherwise this is a great place to visit!”
