About Bullhouse East

Bullhouse East is a bar at 442-446 Newtownards Rd in Belfast, run as the city's first permanent brewery taproom. Twenty taps carry the draught list, and the menu includes a house lager and a large selection of craft beers and ciders, among them New England IPAs. Cans are sold alongside the draught pours. Wine, including natural wines, and spirits complete the drinks list. Wood-fired pizza comes from an area in the small, heated beer garden, and orders go through the bar or outside, a natural match for the craft beer. Speciality coffee is made with Nook Coffee, and cappuccinos are on offer. At busy times the benches are shared, and dogs are allowed.

Good to know

“Belfast's first permanent brewery taproom. 20 taps of the freshest beer in the city, wine (including natural wines) and spirits. Wood fired pizza in the (sometimes) sunny (always heated!) beer garden. Now also serving speciality coffee with Nook Coffee.”

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return to the beer, praising a large selection of craft beers and ciders, with one visitor singling out the Rolling Papers New England IPA and the Merc Bro NEIPA, and another noting takeaway cans. Wood fired pizza comes close behind, with the Pepperoni and Mozzarella and the milano pizza named, and one party reports two pizzas arriving quickly at a good temperature. Cappuccinos also get a mention. Diners describe a relaxed, bright, lively taproom with friendly staff and a beer garden, and one adds that families and dogs are welcome. The main caveat is space. One reviewer found a table tricky to find on a busy Friday and ended up sharing a bench, and rated an earlier Tuesday visit lower. Another calls it not the cheapest pint and the surrounding part of East Belfast not especially welcoming. One reviewer describes an unpleasant encounter with another customer that door staff handled, followed by a few rounds on the house, with the staff refusing to take their money.

“If I’ll be so bold to say; I find this to be the best bar in Belfast. It’s atmosphere is unparalleled to anywhere in Belfast - let alone East - and the Bullhouse Pizza (formerly and mirroring Vitis Pizzaria that was originally there) is delectable and matches perfectly with their selection of craft beers and ciders. A bar that is worthy of the title ‘The Winchester’ as it stands as my go-to bar of choice for either a relaxed night or a first stop before heading to town. The staff are exemplary and deserve the highest praise for their service under constant pressure during every single weekday. A must-visit spot.”

“We had an unpleasant experience with a customer while out for a few drinks, door staff handled in perfectly and not only that, they gave us a few rounds on the house for our trouble (literally wouldn’t accept my money). All round what could’ve been a terrible night has reaffirmed my love for this bar and its staff. Long live Bullhouse East!”

“This was my second time visiting Bullhouse East, and much exceeded my initial visit- though this is down to the day of the week we chose to visit, in that a Friday evening visit was better than that on a Tuesday. It was somewhat tricky to find a table but if you dont mind asking to share a bench and squeezing yourselves in, you're able to get seated even during peak times. Despite being busy, there was not any queue at the bar (though we noticed that there were busy/quiet periods throughout the evening, so it's about timing your order well) We ordered two pizzas between three and these arrived very quickly, at a good temperature. Table was cleared promptly after we had finished, and we had space to play card games. Despite it being busy, we didn't feel we were under any time constraints and were welcomed throughout.”

“Pure happenstance, but I was in the area the 3rd Saturday in June just past, when, unbeknowenst to me, Bullhouse had their family openday, anyway, a lovely atmosphere, on a magnificent day, with various foodstalls etc in the allyway or stree behind, backing onto the Connswater park behind. What life should be like every weekend.”

“Friendly spacious taproom with a great range of beers and takeaway cans plus pizza available. Bright and lively I thought it well worth the trip out to the not especially welcoming end of East Belfast. Not the cheapest pint but you pay what you do for good beer like this. Well worth the trip.”
