About The Dirty Onion and Yardbird

The Dirty Onion and Yardbird is an Irish pub at 3 Hill St in Belfast, open daily. A Jameson barrel sculpture stands in the beer garden, and the Dirty Onion bar next door hosts live music, while the Yardbird side runs as the restaurant. The kitchen centres on chicken and ribs, with a half rack of ribs often paired with chicken wings. Loaded fries come with chicken, gravy, cheese and crispy onions, and the chicken sandwich sits alongside a chicken burger. Rotisserie chicken is served with grilled or steamed corn and sweet potato fries. For dessert, the choices include sticky toffee pudding and cheesecake with ice cream.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return to the ribs and wings at Yardbird, describing ribs that fell off the bone and melt in the mouth, with crispy wings and sweet potato fries alongside. Close behind are the gravy fries topped with tender chicken, cheese and crispy onions, plus the Buffalo fried chicken sandwich and chicken burger. Several also name the sticky toffee pudding and a very spicy spice bag. Downstairs, the Dirty Onion draws praise for its live bands and a wide choice of beers, and diners describe it as heaving and jumping, with a lively mid-week crowd too. Service is called friendly, efficient and quick, and one server was credited with the restaurant's music playlist. The only criticism comes from one reviewer, who found the chicken needed more seasoning and disliked part of the burger sauce, though they still called the service great and the Monday night atmosphere packed. One group of five finished everything on the table and noted the service charge was included in the bill.

“We came in for a pint because we liked the name. We stayed for dinner. We did not have a reservation but it was before 6pm, so we were seated straight away. The server was excellent, with fantastic manners. We ordered the Chicken Burger and spice bag to share. Our son ordered the chicken tenders and grilled corn with ice cream for dessert. The spice bag was very spicy, but delicious. The Chicken burger was fantastic. I would highly recommend the Yardbird restaurant and The Dirty Onion bar. Great atmosphere and fast service. 11/10”

“We were here for lunch a couple of days back. We just googled and searched for the place. We were a group of 5. We ordered the one ribs-wings combo with fries, two quarters of rotisserie chicken, one steamed corn, one sticky coffee pudding and one cheesecake with ice cream. Everything was polished off - food was delicious. Even better was the lady who was serving us - I think her name was Alexandra. She was cheerful, efficient and super helpful. The place is also value for money - our total bill came up to gbp 77. This is inclusive of service charge.”

“The dirty onion downstairs was absolutely heaving! Upstairs in the Yard Bird was quieter but still a great atmosphere. We’d booked a table and were soon seated. The food was amazing, proper delicious comfort food. The gravy fries were just delicious. Tasty fries, gorgeous gravy, tender chicken, cheese and crispy onions. A true thing of beauty 😋 My husband had half a rack of ribs. Melt in the mouth tender and delicious. Service was friendly and efficient. We loved our visit.”

“What a great place took a chance and so glad we did. Got chicken sandwiches the first night it was so good came back for a 2nd night to try something different. This time got the ribs and chicken wings and 1 side combo for 25 GBP. It was so good ribs fell off the bone , chicken wings crispy, and sweet potato fries were crispy too. We will definitely be going back”
