About The Northern Whig

The Northern Whig is a bar and grill at 2 Northern Whig Building in Belfast, set up as a designer bar with granite statues as its centrepiece. Food and cocktails share one menu, so the same venue covers a meal and a drink. Seafood chowder is one of the dishes, and a three-course roast dinner is served, including a roast lunch for Mother's Day. Live guitar music is played, with background music at other times.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often single out the seafood chowder, which several reviewers call delicious, alongside goats cheese fritters and a squid starter. Close behind are the roasts and mains: a three course roast, a roast dinner, fish and chips, and a whiskey chicken stack with potatoes one reviewer called perfection. Spicy crispy chicken appetizers and a Jubel peach beer in the beer garden also get praise. Reviewers describe friendly, knowledgeable servers who answer menu questions and make recommendations, and they mention live guitar music and pleasant background music. Several feel the portions and quality justify the cost. The main complaint comes from a Sunday afternoon visitor who was told only drinks could be ordered at their seats, that no table service was available, and that a child could not have dessert even with plenty of empty seating. That reviewer said the same seating confusion happened on a previous Sunday visit. One other reviewer found a dessert a little dry but still enjoyed it. One reviewer closes on a waiter who suggested a strawberry daiquiri mocktail, which they called a wonderful treat.

“We went today 4pm and our waiter was very helpful and friendly. I remembered he had served us last year also and how polite he was though unfortunately I didnt get name. We had starters just while my son had 2course meal and the seafood chowder and goats cheese fritters was so nice! I could have easily ate more. The barmaids were also pleasant and helpful. Will be returning! My son also loved the music that was been played”

“Exceptional Lunch Experience at The Northern Whig – Thank You, Jesus! My partner and I recently stopped into The Northern Whig during our holiday in Belfast, and I am so glad we chose this spot for lunch. While the atmosphere was great, the highlight of our visit was undoubtedly the service provided by our waiter, Jesus. He went above and beyond to ensure our experience was perfect. As visitors looking to try authentic local flavors, we took his recommendation for the seafood chowder, which was absolutely delicious and exactly what I was hoping for. He also suggested a fantastic strawberry daiquiri mocktail that was a wonderful treat. Our entire meal was a success thanks to his guidance. My partner thoroughly enjoyed the squid starter and the salad he recommended for their main, both of which were excellent choices. It is rare to receive such attentive and thoughtful service. Jesus’s genuine hospitality and expertise truly elevated our lunch, and he is a massive credit to The Northern Whig team. We had such a pleasant time that we will certainly be recommending this place to others visiting Belfast. Thank you again, Jesus, for making our holiday lunch so memorable!”

“The Northern Whig is the ultimate Belfast spot for a sunny afternoon. Grab a Jubel peach beer, it’s summer in a glass and head out to the sunshine-soaked beer garden. It is a prime location for people watching, where you’ll see the city’s creative soul on parade; musicians wandering by with instruments and locals sporting a truly one-off dress sense. Best of all, there is bicycle parking right outside, so you can keep a watchful eye on your bike while you soak in the atmosphere. Short, sweet, and perfectly Belfast. Enjoy! 😉”

“Visiting from Scotland and first time at The Northern Whig. The service from arrival to end was excellent. Our server knew the menu and was able to promptly answer any questions we had. The food was cooked to perfection and we'll presented. We felt the cost was well balanced for quality of meal and portion size. Hope to get an opportunity to visit again before heading home.”
