About Root Spice

Root Spice is an Indian restaurant at 15 Argyle St in Bath, down a set of stairs a short walk from Pulteney Bridge, with no view of it from the road. Some tables look out over the river. The tasting menu opens with street food starters, which gives a lighter way into the meal before the main dishes. The à la carte menu includes lamb chops, lamb saag and lamb biriani, and a lunch time deal runs alongside it. Root Spice opens daily and takes walk-ins. Smooth jazz plays in the background.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the naan, with one diner saying they love it and another naming the naan alongside the fish curry and coconut rice. Close behind are the lamb dishes, including lamb chops, a lamb saag with spinach and the lamb on the tasting menu, where the street food starters and crab also draw praise. Others mention the paneer tikka and a chilli garlic chicken main described as lovely and spicy. Service is called friendly and accommodating, with swaps allowed on the taster menu and a dairy free option suggested, and one couple says their two dogs were welcome. Not every visit went well. One reviewer reports lukewarm biriani lamb and dry, chewy chicken, a long black hair in an onion bhaji, and no apology when it was raised, and another found the bhajis too crispy outside. The same diner felt pushed to order a second rice. Reviewers also note that the restaurant is hard to spot from the road, and one diner who walked in anyway was pleasantly surprised.

“Great Indian restaurant with a lovely atmosphere and delicious food. Everything we ordered was full of flavour, especially the lamb saag with spinach, which was outstanding. Highly recommend if you’re visiting Bath!”

“The first Indian haute cuisine I ever tried, and somehow a fitting concept for the UK! It turned out to be really delicious; each dish was made with attention to detail, and taste are true to indien cuisine : strong spicy, and delicious. It was a fantastic unexpected discovery, that I would fully recommend! Prices are above average, but for what it is, and for the environment you get certainly, quite cheap actually!”

“We were delighted with the whole set up at root spice. Firstly, we were pleased to find that our two dogs were welcome. The food was excellent with a great choice. They were able to advise me of a dairy free option. It is a really attractive venue, with a big of smooth jazz in the background. Excellent service and at a reasonable price. Highly recommended.”

“Treated my two daughters to Root Spice on Friday night. It’s tucked away down stairs with a view from some tables of the river. We’ve were in town and fancied an Indian. Root Spice had great reviews on google so thought we were safe: Ordered 2 x glasses of Rose (I don’t think we confirmed the measure size). Obviously, they delivered large measures. 1 x Onion Bhaji 1 x Rice (very pushy for us to order another rice) 1 x Sag Aloo 1 x Butter Chicken 1 x Chicken Jalfrezi (we were warned the dish would be spicy). 1 x Lamb Biriani All the dishes arrived within 10-15 mins. The dishes weren’t hot so my guess is not freshly cooked! The lamb in the biriani was luke warm as was the chicken, which was dry and chewy! The icing on the cake was a long jet black hair (we are fair heads). In one of the two onion bhajis. When the waiter came to clear our plates we asked for a container as there was enough left, for another portion. I pointed this out to him re the hair in the bhaji and said ‘ok, ok’! I wasn’t sure he understood so alerted him again! I asked for the bill as we needed to leave. The waiter proceeded to come over with the desert menu! I asked again for the bill. After, 10 mins the bill didn’t present itself. So I called another waiter over! The bill was bought over and no mention of the hair in the food. No apology - £97+ was not worth it! We won’t be going back.”
