Customer Review Summary
Reviewers center on the food, above all the Sunday roast, where one describes pork belly with roast potatoes as perfectly cooked and another praises a baked hispi cabbage with romesco sauce as a tasty alternative to the usual vegetarian offerings. Close behind are the hop pole burger, a steak dinner plated on two separate plates for children to share, and desserts. The ales, local ciders and local lager draw repeated praise, with one reviewer saying the ale was kept excellently and another noting three real ales. Several call the staff friendly and welcoming, and one mentions a clearly marked allergen menu with solid gluten-free options. Reviewers also describe a community-run pub with a quiz night, a well-kept garden, and a quiet canal-side setting, and a couple say they booked a table. One solo traveller found no food on offer, but the pub had arranged for a mobile pizza maker to visit for the evening, and that visitor said it went down a storm.

“I can't fault this pub. From an attractive and attentive front of house staff, to excellent ales in prime condition. Add original and superbly presented meals and an indefinable 'pubby' ambience. It also has an interesting history. I'm incredibly envious of those who live locally.”

“What a place! A community run pup just off the Kennet & Avon canal. We booked a table because of the previous reviews and its location on the canal. It was by far the best place we stopped. Very quiet mooring in stunning tree lined stretch of the river. The food was exceptional. Nothing like ‘pub’ food. Gourmet selection and fabulous specials. Love love this place. Don’t miss out. Book a table if you’re close”

“Friendly staff, lovely refurbished pub with three real ales. Nice garden with patio and two rooms inside . Small car park, lovely village setting near old station. Dishes incorporate home grown produce and the menu is changeable. Reopened by the community this pub is well worth a visit and is the heart of the village.”

“A visit this time to introduce my companion to the place, after telling him how much I appreciated the food, how excellently the Ale was kept and how agreeable the ambience. He concured on all my observations, I'm pleased to say. I'd really like to get a Hop Pole polo shirt with the pubs logo - I have one from most of the other pubs in the area.”

“Fantastic pub, the service was superb the minute we walked in. Food tasted delicious, solid GF items and a clearly marked allergen menu. We loved how the food was plated, and the garden was well kept. Thank you for finding us a table!”
