Quick info
About The Crispy Cod
The Crispy Cod is a fish and chips takeaway in Ballymena, on Galgorm Court Fenaghy Road. It has traded for over 20 years and prepares every order fresh from local new hand-cut potatoes. The fish supper pairs Icelandic cod with Maris Piper chips, and mushy peas and gravy chips sit alongside it. Customers can sit in as well as take food away, and the shop works on a walk-in basis. Payment is cash only, and a cash machine is a couple of units down the street. Saturday nights are busy, and orders phoned in ahead can still involve a wait.

Customer Review Summary
Cod and chips draw the warmest praise, with one reviewer calling the Icelandic cod and Maris Piper chips fresh and a match for the best fish and chips back home, served with mushy peas. The chips and the gravy chip also earn credit, and several describe friendly staff, reasonable prices and takeaways that never disappointed. Waits are the recurring complaint. Reviewers say food took far longer than quoted on the phone, and one pre-order arrived very late and wrong, with sliced chicken and onion rings instead of the breast of chicken ordered. Another reviewer had part of an order forgotten. Quality is uneven for some. One fish supper was mostly batter with a black edge and very greasy, a battered sausage was not crispy, and two cheeseburgers went cold waiting on the chips. One reviewer reports being charged more than the menu total on repeat orders. A diner who returned after a slow first visit conceded the chippy is a great one on its day.

“Called in around 5pm on Tuesday 28th April for 2 chesseburgers and a chip. Menu price £4.70, £4.70 and £4.50,total £13.90. Looing at my revolut card an hour ago I was charged £14.90. Is there a £1 charge I dont know about. This is the second time this has happened with the same order. We are so used to tapping our card it is worthwhile to check a receipt to make sure it is right. Also the 2 cheeseburgers sat waiting on the chip and they were cold when eaten. When blanching chips usually you scope out the small bits of potato that float as nobody wants a chip full of unedible hard bits like I had. Chip was a smaller portion than elsewhere. There were 5 customers in the shop at the time.Time and date given if owner wants to check his till roll.”

“Food pretty decent when it finally comes. But 35 minute wait (was told 10 on phone) and forgetting part of order not on. Will not be back. Update - Well I eventually did return. And have to admit that on its day it is a 5 star chippy”

“Excellent chips albeit a small enought portion for a large, battered sausage was not crispy in the slightest tho and didn’t even come with a few chips. No card transactions under £5 but no signs to say this. Lady was fairly rude too.”
