Quick info
About Axe & Cleaver
On School Ln in Altrincham, Axe & Cleaver is a pub serving traditional British dishes. The kitchen turns out a lamb shank shepherd's pie, and fish and chips arrives with mushy peas, scampi, bloomer bread and butter, and a side of onion rings. Vegetarians and vegans are covered on Sundays, when a vegan Sunday roast is on offer, and several vegan desserts mean a plant-based meal can run through to the final course. The main menu is backed by a specials board, where a chicken, cheese and leek pie has appeared. A lunch menu and all-day menus let guests choose from midday onward.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the friendly staff, with several describing the extra effort made for family birthdays, including a card and cake for a 70th and a pudding served on a decorated board. The food gets praise too: fish and chips with mushy peas and scampi, chicken pies, a lamb shank shepherd's pie, and a vegan Sunday roast followed by vegan Bakewell tart. Portions are called generous, and one reviewer jokes that mentioning peas brings a huge pile of them. Heat is the recurring complaint. One diner says the cheese on the shepherd's pie was tough and rubbery from the microwave, and both that dish and the sticky toffee pudding were too hot to eat for several minutes. The same reviewer found a four-prawn starter small and had a main course left off the order. A separate one-star review describes a duck salad with stale carrot and dry duck, and a promised refund the manager never followed up. One reviewer suggests booking on Sundays. Another recalls the server decorating the board for a dad's birthday pudding.

“I don’t normally come on here to write negative reviews, normally only positive. Having said that the food was disgraceful and the reaction from the guy serving us no better. The duck salad had weeks old stale carrot in it , the duck was as dry as a bone and prepacked couscous literally the worst meal anyone has ever served me. See the photos for the “fresh veg salad “ To then be told I’ve said sorry I’ve spoke to the kitchen I’ll make anote on the app . Just avoid at all costs. To be told we will process a refund and then to not hear anything from the manager is just poor customer service alongside poor quality product. I will be back in today for the refund in person.”

“We visited on a Tuesday lunch time and it was nice to see the pub with quite a few people eating there. We were seated promptly by a lovely gentleman in a green t-shirt. He gave us menus and took drinks. I ordered the chicken off the lunch menu and my friend ordered a pasta and asparagus dish off the specials menu. Both arrived in good time and were hot and well presented with good sized portions. We had desserts after. I had the lemon cheese cake which was presented in a chocolate shell shaped like a lemon, it was delicious! And my friend had the sticky toffee pudding followed by coffee. The staff were attentive and polite and the ladies toilets were clean. There was lots of seating outside and a good sized car park to the rear. This pub does seem a little off the beaten track but well worth a visit. Will come again.”

“Waiting staff were excellent going the extra mile to enhance our experience Wonderful choice considering it was a set Father's Day menu. My husband really enjoyed his 70th birthday. Thanks for the card and birthday cake. Alyson was amazing especially with the grandchildren. 5 stars all round. Will definitely come again x”

“The staff were lovely and very accommodating. Alyson especially, she was charming and couldn't do enough for us. They treated my father-in-law so well on his 70th. Fantastic. The foods nice, its standard pub fare. Just dint tell her you like peas, as they will give you a huge pile of them. All on all a good experience..”
