Customer Review Summary
Scallops are the dish reviewers raise most, and opinions split. One diner calls them some of the best ever, cooked beautifully with lentils and fennel cream. Another found them very small for the price, and a third counted only a few strands of rock samphire alongside. Close behind are the fish mains, with cod and pan-fried seabass over veloute praised as well cooked, and the gnocchi, called good in one review and stodgy beside tender oxtail in another. The chicken liver parfait on an English muffin is described as unbelievably good but very small, and desserts such as chocolate ganache with cherries and the affogato earn warm mentions. The recurring complaints are heavy salt, from the creamed leek on the seabass to the gnocchi dish, and uneven service. Several describe a nearly empty dining room, yet one pair sat with empty glasses while the waiters chatted. Another waited for a wine order only to be told the Sauvignon Blanc had run out, then got a replacement glass placed down with no discussion.

“Wednesday evening in the summer, and we were the only people all night. That says we got good service, and maybe the food was better as no rush? Anyway the menu is very varied and imaginative. What's impressive for those with dietary issues was that nearly all the menu was gluten free The tomato salad was a bit disappointing. For the main I had the roast tikka monkfish, which was a very tasty and substantial fusion dish. The Tarragoto (Affogato) was a nice light end to a great meal.”

“Having seen previous posts we had high expectations of an amazing Sunday lunch, even though our expectations were so high we were blown away with the quality and quantity of the meal we were served. We could not believe how reasonable it was for such a good quality meal. Having travelled around Scotland for the last 2 weeks this has been by far our best meal when eating out. It is a shame that we live in Birmingham but maybe one day Tarragon by Graham Mitchell will open up closer to the south.”

“The meal itself was lovely. Unfortunately, the service was a very different story. It felt as if the server had been pulled in from the street with little or no knowledge of the menu or drinks. It was hard to believe the restaurant had run out of Sauvignon Blanc. After waiting around 15 minutes and eventually chasing the server, my wife was told there was none available. Instead she could have Pinot Grigio or another wine, which she chose. There was no discussion about glass size, no offer to taste the wine; just a glass placed on the table. To make matters worse, the cost of the glass was nearly half the price of our bottle of red, and frankly it wasn’t very good. I was planning to order another drink, but catching the eye of either the barman or the server proved almost impossible. In the end, it was difficult enough just to get the bill. A real shame, because we had heard very good things about the restaurant from family. We’re meeting friends soon for Sunday lunch, all of whom live around the Rosemount area, and Tarragon would have been the perfect spot. Sadly, based on this experience, we won’t be returning.”

“Visited Tarragon recently and unfortunately the experience was very disappointing. I started with the Cullen skink which was extremely underwhelming. There was only one very small piece of smoked haddock in the bowl and the dish was overloaded with diced potatoes, which completely threw the balance of what should be a rich, smoky soup. My wife had the scallops to start. While the flavour was pleasant, the scallops themselves were very small and felt quite disappointing given the price of the dish. For mains, my wife chose the seabass. I genuinely struggle to believe the dish was tasted before service. The creamed leek element was so heavily salted that it was almost inedible – and that’s coming from someone who enjoys salt in food. I ordered the oxtail with gnocchi. The oxtail itself was cooked perfectly and very tender, but unfortunately the rest of the dish let it down. The gnocchi and sauce were heavy and stodgy, lacking balance and finesse. It feels like this dish could have been executed in a much better way.Truffle and Parmesan side order of chips also disappointing no seasoning added to the chips and even with the seasoning of Parmesan sprinkled on top they were very bland. I did pass my comments to the waiter, who said he would relay them to the kitchen. As always, we left a tip, but on this occasion the visit was a real disappointment.Love spending my hard earned cash on local companies but unfortunately would not rush back”

“We spent Hogmanay at Tarragon Restaurant, and it was absolutely outstanding. The food… wow. I had the special scallops to start, which were honestly some of the best scallops I’ve ever had, beautifully cooked and paired perfectly with lentils and a fennel cream. For my main, the cod was cooked to perfection, delicate and full of flavour. Dessert was a chocolate ganache with cherries, and it was the perfect ending to the meal. Every single dish was beautifully presented and genuinely delicious. One of the best meals I’ve had in a very long time. A truly special Hogmanay experience. we’ll definitely be back.”
