Customer Review Summary
Cod and chips is what reviewers return to most, with diners praising the crispy, soft chips and a batter one compares to tempura, light rather than heavy. Close behind is the steak pie, described as stacked with meat and served with gravy that one reviewer found excellent. Others mention haddock, scampi, a large fish that was effectively two portions, and sides of peas and curry sauce. Fish and chips is said to come with bread and butter and tea or coffee. Several describe quick service and friendly staff, with one noting a drink arrived at the table within minutes of ordering. Portions are called huge or generous, and one diner struggled to finish and skipped dessert. Reviewers also mention gluten free fish and chips, picnic benches and outdoor seating, and the sit down and takeaway options. Value gets repeated praise. No review raises a complaint. Many are travellers on the way to Whitby, Pickering or Sheffield, and one calls it a regular stop from now on.

“Following a business meeting in York, my colleague and were hungry and we both suggested Thompson's Famous Fish & Chips on the A64 on the outskirts of York. There is plenty of parking outside, and we were shown straight to a table near the window. The service was prompt and efficient. We both ordered fish and chips (gluten free for me) and the food came quickly. It was piping hot and very tasty indeed. The portion for me was just right and if I'd had time I might have been tempted to a pudding! All in all, a great experience and the price was reasonable.”

“We haven’t even left the car park and I had to write this review!!! We popped in on our way to Whitby and ordered a cod & chips with sides and ate it in the dedicated outdoor seating area. Perhaps we had lovely weather on our side but I doubt even the rainiest, overcast days would alter my opinion that this meal was outstandingly delightful. The chips were perfection - soft but crispy. How??? And the fish was perfectly battered where it was not too heavy - almost a lovely tempura. I cannot rate highly enough of this place and will return next time we visit. This is a wonderful place to stop in for a quick bite, refresher (if bathroom is needed).”

“Called on our way back to Sheffield from bank Holiday in Whitby. It was evening but we had fish n chips steak pie and chips peas, gravy and curry sauce. We ate on the picnic benches and it was really nice. Much better than expected and will now become a regular stop for us. The fish was fresh and tasted great. The Steak pie looked home made and was full of meat. If your passing check em out.”
