About The Pig and Pastry
On Bishopthorpe Road in York, The Pig and Pastry is a café and breakfast restaurant run on a walk-in basis. It runs a broad breakfast and brunch menu that takes in kedgeree and a club sandwich at lunch, and the kitchen plates a French toast special alongside home-made cake. A cappuccino accompanies the morning side of the menu, and allergy-friendly choices run through the larger offering. Service moves quickly even when the room fills up and a queue forms. Dogs are welcome inside.

Customer Review Summary
Breakfast is the draw, and the veggie fry-up is the dish reviewers name most. Close behind are the French toast special with berry compote and Chantilly cream, the Turkish eggs, the spinach pancake and the kedgeree, with the pea guacamole and a club sandwich also praised. Take-away cakes get mentions too, including a cheese and garlic scone and a banana, tahini and seeds loaf. Reviewers describe friendly, fast service and a cute, cozy room, and one notes the menu suits vegetarians and vegans as well as carnivores. Crowding is the recurring trade-off: one pair got the last open table just after nine and saw a queue form, another says to be prepared for a wait, and one suggests booking if that is possible. One reviewer who uses a cane walked there in a heatwave and found it closed for apparent renovations, with no notice online.

“Took my son for lunch and received quick and friendly service. Very welcoming even though it was at a busy time. Food and coffee was exceptional. Why waste money at a faceless chain restaurant/cafe when you can support local businesses like this who go the extra mile to make you feel so welcome. Ordered the club sandwich which was far from basic, cooked to perfection and full of flavour.”

“A beautiful little cafe with a big menu. Everything on the menu was tempting but had the kedgeree which was lovely.”

“We had breakfast at this excellent little place on Saturday morning. When we arrived just after 9 we got the only open table. I don’t know if they take bookings but if they do I would suggest one. When we left there was a queue. We both had the French toast special with a cappuccino. Despite the place being packed the service was fast. The berry compote and the Chantilly cream were outstanding and the coffee was solid. The staff was super friendly and helpful and the price was very reasonable. Would definitely eat here again.”

“We had breakfast here and it was fantastic. If we didn’t live 2hrs away we would definitely be regulars here. A super friendly atmosphere and quirky setting”
