About Big Baps

On Elvington Industrial Estate in York, Big Baps is a cafe built around a counter service format with no reservations taken. The menu runs from a full English breakfast and breakfast bap through to a chip butty, alongside a Mega Bap loaded with sausage, egg, bacon, mushroom, tomato and beans. Spam, egg and bean sandwiches sit alongside bacon and egg baps, with cream buns and caramel slices for something sweet. Tea and coffee are on offer alongside the food. The entrance is step-free, allowing visitors with mobility needs to get in without difficulty. It opens Monday to Friday during the day and stays closed at weekends, so trade is confined to weekday daytime hours. Orders are taken at the counter on a walk-in basis.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come back to the full English and the filled baps, with the Mega Bap packed with sausage, egg, bacon, mushroom, tomato and beans, and a bacon and egg bap both singled out. Breakfasts are described as plentiful, cooked nicely and served quickly, and several call the portions good sized and the prices reasonable. Close behind is the friendly man running the place, whom diners mention for a chat over coffee or tea, and one says he still made a quick coffee while closing up on a Friday. A chip butty, cream buns and big caramel slices taken home also get a mention from one pair of diners. The one critical voice finds a large spam, egg and bean sandwich overpriced and underdelivered, saying the filling was nowhere near the edges of the bread cake and that they will not return. Elsewhere, several reviewers say they plan to come back, and one calls it a cafe on an industrial estate behind the York Air Museum with a cracking breakfast and a cracking chinwag.

“Cracking breakfast and a cracking chinwag too. Lovely lil place.”

“I'm glad we tried this little place. Good sized portions, a lovely mug of tea, and the full English & chip butty were polished off with cream buns. Then we bought some big caramel slices to take home, because we're a pair of gannets. Now we know it's here, we'll definitely pop in again if we're close by.”
  • Neil Holmes
“Really friendly and pleasant, nice coffee. Just closing up on a Friday but still had time to make a quick coffee and have a chat 5*”
  • Thomas McEwan
“Had a nice fry up here cooked nicely and served quickly, reasonably priced too. Thanks”
  • Melanie Brown
“We both chose a Mega Bap which was filled with sausage, egg, bacon, mushroom, tomato and beans. Went down very well accompanied by a lovely chat with the man that works there. Would recommend this as a good value friendly place to eat.”
