About Lysander Arms
Set in the North of York on Manor Lane, Lysander Arms is a pub and restaurant with a bar and a beer garden out back. Dogs are welcome, and the kitchen runs a broad pub menu that includes a burrata salad, a burger, a steak pie and a seafood basket. The steak pie arrives filled with steak and served red hot. Behind the bar, the team pours a wide range of beer, wine and spirits, and milkshakes sit on the drinks list alongside. The format suits both casual drinks in the garden and sit-down meals inside, and the room draws a regular local crowd alongside visitors heading further north out of the city.

“We had a really enjoyable experience and will definitely be coming back. The food was tasty, the portions were generous, the prices felt fair for what you get, and the milkshakes were fantastic. The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive and welcoming, making it a lovely place to relax. For that alone, this is an easy 4 star review. As someone who teaches future chefs and leads a professional kitchen as a head chef, I naturally notice the finer details. The sweetcorn was unfortunately overcooked. It seemed to have been boiled in advance and then finished on the grill to order. It had absorbed too much water and lost its natural sweetness and texture. I would recommend grilling fresh corn instead of pre-boiling it—it makes a huge difference. The team kindly refunded it without any hesitation, which was very much appreciated. The burrata salad was fresh and tasty, but I’d suggest serving the burrata whole rather than tearing it apart in the kitchen. Cutting into a whole burrata at the table is part of the experience and something guests genuinely enjoy. The burger was full of flavour, but the beef patty was quite thick. Because of that, it needs a longer cooking time, which makes it much easier to dry out. A slightly flatter patty would cook more evenly and stay much juicier. I was also a little surprised by the cherry tomatoes in the burger, as they tend to slip out when you’re eating it. These are only small details, because overall the food was genuinely good. I would simply encourage the kitchen to keep aiming for maximum freshness and juiciness and never let standards slip. People eat with their eyes first, and it’s clear that your chefs already have good plating skills. With just a little more attention to these finishing touches, the food would be outstanding. Thank you for a lovely meal—we’ll definitely be back.”

“Staff were really friendly and helpful, service was great. The steak pie was crammed with steak and red hot, some of the salmon in the seafood basket was a bit dry. The dining area is nice, the pub area less so.”
