About House Of Canton
On Bridgnorth Rd in Wolverhampton, House Of Canton is a Cantonese restaurant at number 16-18. Its menu follows an old-school Cantonese format, with a Mongolian Lamb starter to begin and Chinese casseroles among the mains. Singapore chow mein sits on the same list for anyone who wants a noodle dish instead of a casserole. Opening is evenings only. It is open every day of the week except Tuesdays, when it is closed.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the curries, with one calling the Chinese chicken curry rich and warming and another regularly ordering a special curry meal. The Singapore chow mein, Szechuan chicken, Mongolian Lamb starter and Chinese casseroles also draw words like flavourful and delicious. Several mention friendly staff and generous portions, one says the interior is starting to show its age, and another reports new ownership with a new chef and menu. The complaints are specific. One dine-in reviewer waited so long for drinks and starters that a larger table arriving later was served first. Another received a takeaway chow mein with no vegetables and unblended globules of sauce, and a third describes a New Year's Eve collection with a backlog and half the order missing. A couple cite price rises, and one says a card payment the website advertised was refused. One reviewer advises pre-booking and giving the exact party size. The dine-in diner ended by paying only for what had arrived and leaving hungry.

“I’ve had both the worst collection AND dine-in experiences, both from HoC, where the only response I got was the most insincere apology. The collection was on New Year’s Eve years ago, where they clearly wouldn’t stop taking orders despite having a massive backlog, with the collection room filling with people waiting 40 minutes after their agreed collection times. The manager stood taking calls, saying “sorry” and that they could take on more orders, in front of everyone that knows otherwise. When we were finally handed ours, we were missing half the order. The dine-in experience over the weekend was horrendous. Three of us walked into an almost empty restaurant around 6:30 to 7pm, into a horrible LED lit, dark, tacky poorly ventilated room which could have been mistaken for a brothel, with two very young looking waiters at attention. We asked if they could offer us a table for three without a booking, to which they said yes. It took 45 minutes to get a drink and 1 hour 15 minutes to get starters. Meanwhile, the restaurant started getting busier, and all the while a larger table who arrived after us received their drinks, starters and mains within the hour of arriving. At the 2 hour mark, I stood up to go and complain at the front, and saw the waiter bringing food in our direction, only to curve away towards the bigger table. I asked how much longer it would take, and they nervously said it would be “soon”. At that point, the three of us stood up, went to the front and declared that we were paying for what we’d had and leaving. The manager then bemoaned her staff to us, which was unprofessional. We told her staff that they were doing fine and were being let down because there clearly weren’t enough experienced staff to support them. Our complaints weren’t against the inexperienced waiters or the chefs who were clearly doing the best they could. The failure was with the management responsible for putting them in that position. She then asked for only £20 for the meal so far, which we paid, before leaving hungry and appalled. Avoid this place. Even if the food is good, it’s not worth the grief.”

“We dined here for the first time and were very pleased with the whole experience. Nice atmosphere, friendly staff and excellent food. The Mongolian Lamb starter, together the Chinese casseroles for mains, were all delicious. We will be back!”

“House of Canton has been part of the local dining scene for as long as I can remember, and there’s something reassuring about a restaurant that has quietly stood the test of time. It continues to deliver the kind of dependable, comforting Chinese food people return for again and again, generous portions, familiar flavours, and consistently satisfying dishes whether you dine in or order takeaway. On this visit we ordered the Singapore chow mein, Chinese chicken curry with egg fried rice, and the Szechuan chicken. All three dishes were flavourful, well-prepared, and exactly the kind of comforting classic Chinese cuisine you hope for from a long-established UK favourite. The curry was rich and warming, the Singapore chow mein had a nice kick of spice, and the Szechuan chicken brought plenty of bold flavour without overpowering the dish. The interior may be starting to show its age slightly, but it still has a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere that adds to its old-school charm. Service was friendly throughout our visit, and the prices remain very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes offered. A reliable local staple that continues to do what it does well. Comforting, familiar Chinese food served with consistency and warmth.”

“Food is ok but service is haphazard. The biggest gripe is it clearly states they take AMEX on the website for AMEX and I’ve paid in there previously several times and tonight they have decided to not take it much to my inconvenience. Seems they would rather lose custom than pay an extra £1.60 in card fees. It will be our last visit.”
