About The Gates
The Gates is a coffee shop in Wigan at 200 Wigan Ln, a short walk from the hospital and near the plantation gates. The kitchen serves soup of the day and toasted sandwiches, and cakes come alongside the coffee. Dogs are welcome, and they get a dog menu and free treats, so owners can bring a pet along instead of leaving it at home. The menu is compact and built around quick daytime food and drink. The shop is also a supported employer that does work for the community.

Customer Review Summary
The soup of the day is the most praised item, with one reviewer calling the carrot and coriander always homemade and another describing the fresh soup as great value. Coffee comes close behind, called good and delicious, with one reviewer singling out the chocolate on the cappuccino. Sandwiches also earn praise, including a ham and cheese toastie with a side salad that one reviewer first thought expensive until it arrived, and a sausage toasted sandwich. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly and kind, and one reviewer says they sorted out a payment problem when the till misbehaved with no fuss. The main criticism comes from a late-morning visitor who found the menu very limited, with no fried eggs, and the sausages on a bacon and sausage on toast overcooked and dry. That reviewer found the cake fairly good but not outstanding. Dog owners mention a dog menu and free treats.

“It might be because I was there late in the morning 11am I had bacon and sausage on toast (very limited menu and for some reason they don't do fried eggs? ) the sausages not particularly high quality and where very over cooked and dry bacon and toast were ok again nothing great I also had a cake again fairly good but not outstanding. And around £9 for both so for coffee and a cake not bad nice place to sit has outdoor seating and dog friendly overal I would go again but not considered a must visit cafe”

“My friend and I went for a walk and a lovely gentleman recommended The Gates to us as we were looking for a bite to eat. The food was really good, simple but fresh and well prepared. The service was friendly. The place is welcoming and a good atmosphere. On the day the till was playing up and there was some confusion over my payment. The staff sorted it out with no fuss and Jane was really friendly and helpful. If you are looking for a good coffee and some good food. Head on over to The Gates. I would definitely recommend a visit.”

“I nipped to the Gates Cafe on my dinner with my partner. The service was quick, friendly and polite. The food was brill too, we both got the same meal, a drink and a cake for £23. The Gates Cafe is a supported employer and does amazing things for the community. It’s in a fab spot just near the plantation gates and the hospital. I 100% reccomend if you fancy a bite to eat and want to support local businesses ❤️🛍️”
