Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise hot, fresh food in generous portions, with a regular naming steak and ale pie and fish and chips, plus a wide range of beers and ales. The buffet follows, with two families who held wakes calling it lovely and incredible, plenty of it for 67 guests, and staff sectioning off an area so everyone sat together. Wakes also draw the sharpest complaints. Two reviewers describe staff discussing rotas and complaining about management within earshot of mourners, and one adds that a spill was met with a thrown roll of blue paper and plates ran out at a buffet for 60 before most had eaten. Separately, one diner found the chicken dry, the nachos mostly crumbs and the taco shells inedible, another found the food lacking flavour, and one noted smelly toilets. Staff are repeatedly called friendly, and one birthday party says a server let them put up a banner and sang happy birthday.

“Thank you for looking after us today. We were a large party of 9 but nothing was too much trouble. We felt very well looked after and the food was fresh and tasty.”

“Had a wonderful experience at the Stag today. Food was delicious and hot. Very generous portions and great value for money. The service was spot on, special mention to Laura who looked after us from start to finish. We was celebrating a friend's birthday. She allowed us to put a banner out and even sang happy birthday. We will definitely be returning”

“We shared 5 plates of food out of the 5 we enjoyed 1. The chicken was dry. The nachos were crumbs with minimal topping. The taco shells were inedible but you can't ruin fries. Overall I enjoy the stag the environment is nice, however today the food was bad hopefully the next time we visit the food would have been improved.”

“I’m extremely disappointed with how we were treated during my friend’s wake. This was meant to be a difficult day where compassion, professionalism, and respect should have been shown, but unfortunately that was far from our experience. The lack of sensitivity and understanding from staff was upsetting at a time when emotions were already running high. The atmosphere created by the poor treatment added unnecessary stress and upset to an already heartbreaking occasion. A wake is a time for people to come together, remember their loved one, and grieve in peace. To be met with such poor service and lack of empathy was deeply unacceptable. I would not recommend this venue to anyone looking for a respectful and supportive environment for such an important and emotional event. Quite frankly it is none of my business as to the comings and goings of the stag the bar and its staff! So I cannot fathom why I was privy to such poor conversation relating to other members of staff. Not the time and certainly not the place.”

“On the 06/05 we held my partner’s wake at the stag, please remember when reading this review that this was a wake, the very last thing that I got to do for my partner and the place his children got to see how loved and missed he was. The attitude of the staff was absolutely appalling, mourners were ignored at the bar as the staff discussed rotas and openly complained about management and staff, there were 2 occasions where drinks were spilt (it is a pub this happens), on the first occasion the staff member told the customer I don’t have time to clean that and practically threw the blueroll at her. On the second occasion, the spill was seen by the staff member, the person close to the spill wasn’t even the one who spilt it, she said I’ll get you something to clean that up with, we did not clean it up, we didn’t spill it and we don’t work there, she then kept walking past mumbling that it hadn’t been cleaned yet. I paid for a buffet for 60 people, before hardly anyone had eaten they ran out of plates, when we asked for more we were told well we don’t have anymore, she then took dirty plates off tables and put them on the pile! There was plenty of food left so there’s no way 60 people had eaten at this point! One mourner heard a staff member say ‘some f-ing party this is’ I spoke to the person explaining how unhappy I was, he said he’d call back the following day, he did not, he stated he had a family emergency, which to be honest just adds to the unprofessional nature of the place, I’m telling you staff were discussing private things in front of us and then he you do the same?! He handled the complaint fairly well up to a point, he then asked me what I wanted, like I was after a refund, like money would give me back what they ruined, he then said I wish I could turn back the clock… don’t we all! What I actually want is for no one to use this place for something as important as a wake, to not have to feel how I do. They don’t deserve the business, they don’t deserve jobs. Every single staff member involved should feel utterly ashamed! Don’t know how they sleep at night knowing how disrespectful they were”
