About Barley Mow

The Barley Mow is a pub in Warrington on Old Market Place, in the middle of Golden Square, in a building that dates to 1561. That age gives drinkers a long-standing room in which to settle in for a pint. Live sport is shown on site. Pints at the bar include cask ale, and the kitchen serves pub meals with chips, among them a chicken and cheese melt and a steak pie with peas. Burgers are also on the menu, including the bbq mac burger. The pub also runs food and drink deals.

Customer Review Summary

The criticism is sharper but less frequent. One lunch visit brought a chicken and cheese melt with unmelted cheese, a kids beef burger that was half grizzle, and half cold chips, and the slow staff made complaining feel pointless. Another reviewer found two lagers went flat almost straight away and felt the pub looked tired and needed new glassware. A third met a grumpy bar welcome, though the cask pint itself was nice.

“Visited today after a shopping trip for my daughters birthday and were served by the very polite and helpful adam and nick who went above and beyond with their service. Adam made my daughter a special mocktail with sweet decorations and umbrella which she loved! Food we ordered was well presented hot and delicious, my daughter loved the bbq mac burger too. Thankyou for a lovely afternoon. Would highly recommend to future diners.”

“We had a lovely afternoon out with the family and enjoyed a fantastic meal. The food was lovely, and the service from Tina, Shell and James was brilliant! They were all so friendly, welcoming and attentive, which made our visit even more enjoyable. It’s always nice to be looked after by staff who go that extra mile to make you feel welcome. Thank you for making our family afternoon so special. We’ll definitely be back! Highly recommend! 😊❤️”

“Wow. We walked from the friendly staff of the The Dublin to be greeted by a grumpy little person with attitude.. too busy talking to his mate in the kitchen even to bother checking the bar for customers. Then to be served with such malice we felt like an inconvenience. Shame really as they served a nice pint with the cask marquee stamp. With out a doubt we won't be back. Very quiet pub. Not surprised really with staff attitude like that.”

“Really disappointed with my visit to The Barley Mow. I tried both a Foster’s and a Cruzcampo, and both pints went flat almost straight away. Neither tasted fresh, which was frustrating considering the price. The pub itself could also do with a bit of investment, it feels tired, and even some new glassware and a refresh of the venue would make a big difference. I hope they improve the beer quality and give the place the attention it deserves.”

“Great historic pub. Good food and beers. Nice real fire in winter, you can sit outside and people watch in summer ☀️”
