Quick info
About Jay's Fish Bar
Jay's Fish Bar is a takeaway restaurant on Pleck Rd in Walsall, sitting on a main road directly opposite Manor Hospital. The menu covers battered sausage and chips, a mixed kebab meat tray, and chicken and chips, with curry sauce available on the side. It is a family run operation, and orders are taken on a walk-in basis rather than by reservation. High chairs are available for families with young children eating in. The premises and floor are kept clean, and street parking sits outside for around six to eight cars, useful given the hospital location across the road. It opens Monday to Saturday and stays closed on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return for the battered chips, described as fresh, perfectly crispy, never greasy and fluffy inside, with several calling them the most consistent they have found. Close behind is the fish, which one diner describes as piping hot, along with curry sauce, battered sausage, chicken and chips, and a mixed kebab meat in a tray that one reviewer's partner called the best in a long time. Staff are repeatedly described as friendly, polite and welcoming, and a few point to cheap prices, generous portions and a floor that one reviewer calls actually clean compared with most chip shops. The main criticisms are narrow. One regular reports being given burnt food, and another says the interior could do with a small update to match the quality of the food. One reviewer suggests the shop could become a regular Friday lunchtime stop, and another travels from Bilston by bus and a ten minute walk to eat there.

“I’ve been coming to Jay’s Fish & Chip Shop since it first opened, & it’s been consistent every time. I always order a bag of battered chips, & honestly, they are some of the best I’ve ever had. Always fresh, perfectly crispy, never greasy, just spot on every single time. The portions are generous too. It’s a family run business, & the staff are always friendly & welcoming. The shop is conveniently located on a main road right opposite Manor Hospital, with street parking available right outside for around 6 to 8 cars, so it’s easy to pop in & grab your food. My only criticism would be that the place could do with a small update. It still does the job, but a refresh to the interior would really elevate the overall experience & match the quality of the food. Highly recommend, especially if you love proper crispy battered chips!”
