About Old Mill

Old Mill is a Chef & Brewer pub on Wakefield Rd in Wakefield, set on the north bank of the River Calder beside Kirklees Park and Bradley Park Golf Course, which gives walkers and golfers a place to stop. Inside, fires are lit and the decorated interior has a large seating area. The team takes orders at the table rather than at the bar. A breakfast menu serves a Full English breakfast and includes a gluten free menu, and an afternoon and evening menu runs alongside the daytime one. Burgers, including a chicken burger, come with chips, and halloumi fries and onion rings are available on the side. Dogs are welcome. The car park asks visitors to register their vehicle on the tablets inside the pub to avoid a parking fine.

Customer Review Summary

Diners most often praise the burgers and breakfasts. One says the burgers were cooked really well, with halloumi fries and onion rings on the side, and another singles out a chicken burger with a decent portion of chips. The Full English gets repeated mentions, and several call the food well priced. Close behind are the friendly, attentive staff, a decor reviewers call fantastic, with the fires on, and a pleasant beer garden. Two reviewers brought dogs, and one mentions staff helping with the gluten free menu. The criticism is narrower but specific. One birthday meal brought a steak burnt outside and undercooked inside, a Caesar salad with almost no dressing and very little flavour, and an unexpected parking charge afterward. Another reviewer found the tiramisu very average, and one says it is better to book. In one Full English order, the server let a diner who dislikes tomato and mushroom have an extra sausage instead.

“We stayed at the Premier Inn next door, I arrived very late and only just made the dinner service, I had the Chicken Burger which was very tasty with a decent portion of chips which these days is a rarity ! The following morning we decided to try the breakfast which was excellent ! And very good value too The chap who was taking the orders was super friendly and helped my partner with the gluten free menu. Overall a solid 5 stars and if we are in the area again we would definitely revisit ☺️”

“My husband and I had a wonderful meal here yesterday. The restaurant itself is really cosy inside. Staff were incredibly friendly, service was very good - we were served by Craig who was very welcoming and helpful. The foos was amazing! A great selection and really good value. If we are back in the area we will definitely be returning.”

“We visited this restaurant about three weeks ago to celebrate my birthday, and it turned into one of the most disappointing restaurant experiences I’ve had in the UK. The steak was burnt on the outside but still undercooked inside, as if it had been cooked over extremely high heat for only a minute. It was unpleasant to eat. The Caesar salad was nothing like a Caesar salad. It was mostly large pieces of dark green leaves with a few oversized croutons and almost no proper dressing. It had very little flavour and was extremely disappointing. I didn’t complain at the time because it was my birthday, and I didn’t want to spoil the occasion. We simply finished what we could, paid the bill, and left. The worst surprise came afterwards when we received a parking charge. If customers must pay for parking or register their vehicle, this should be made absolutely clear before they enter the restaurant. Instead, we paid for a very poor meal and then received an unexpected parking fine as well. The combination of poor-quality food and an unpleasant parking experience made this visit extremely disappointing. I hope the owner takes this feedback seriously and improves both the food and the way customers are informed about parking. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend this restaurant and will not be returning.”

“First visit in many years. Fantastic decor inside. Large, spacious, plenty of seating. Very clean. Good selection of drinks. Nice seating area outside. Good bar menu. Food was very nice. There is car park, however you need to register your vehicle reg to avoid a parking fine. There are several tablets inside the pub where you can easily do this. Staff were helpful and welcoming. Looking forward to next visit.”
