About Food Magpie

Food Magpie is a cafe at 19-21 Wood St in Swindon, with a Parisian-style interior behind a shopfront that keeps its Victorian-style signage. The cafe hosts supper club evenings with an Italian theme, which gives groups of friends a shared table-style night out in the same room. Magpie beans are a named item on the menu, and veggie options sit alongside them. The drinks list covers coffee, wine, beers and cocktails, so the same space works for a daytime coffee or an evening glass. Dogs are welcome inside, and owners can bring their own along.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the atmosphere and decor, describing a lovely, cosey room with a Parisian feel and original Victorian signage at the front. The food comes close behind, with Magpie beans called heavenly, a supper club evening singled out for its panzanella starter, lemon chicken and pasta main and apricot and peach dessert, and a coffee with a delicate roast that is not too bitter. Several mention the friendly, polite service, and the owner fetching scraps for a visitor's dog. Dog-friendliness and veggie options also draw approval, with one reviewer noting their dogs got fuss and a snooze by the table.

“I know the food is good if not a little pricey, as I've eaten here many times, the service however is often very poor. On this occasion my wife and I visited for lunch, it was very quiet with only two tables taken. The male waiter was very disorganised, he proceeded to take food and drink orders from 5 other people who had arrived at least 5-10 mins after we arrived. We all know that can be annoying, so we voted with feet and walked out. He made some sarcastic comment as we departed, its a shame the service doesn't match the food.”

“Food was quite tasty but very overpriced. Glorified cheese on toast (not much cheese at that) at £12.50 ! We wanted to order the lentil soup (on the menu) but that particular day they had decided to add chicken to it (we don't eat meat). The worst thing ever was the number of dogs in the room (one of which had bad wind which encouraged us to leave quicker than we had planned). We found it disgusting to find animals in a food establishment - the dog owners should have to dine outside.”

“The service here was quite nice. Popped in here to do a bit of afternoon light reading. The atmosphere here is lovely and its beautifully decorated. The food was alright but I think that was down to my taste buds not liking what I ordered rather than the food being bad. Definitely will try it again sometime!”

“Opening night - perfect spot on Wood Street and a lovely venue. We just came in for a drink but will be back to try the menu. If you know Magnums then you know how friendly the service is ... and how amazing the wine in. Perfect place to meet people, and watch the world go by with excellent food, wine, beers amd cocktails. May have to become a regular haunt.”
