About Saba Maison de Luxe
Saba Maison de Luxe is an Indian restaurant at 38 Low Row in Sunderland, with a two-course pre-theatre menu for Empire Theatre-goers heading to a show. That menu can be upgraded to a "luxe" starter and main. The kitchen cooks dishes from across India, with Bombay calamari among the starters, butter chicken among the mains and a hot "Sri Lanka" dish for those who want more heat. Diners choose mild, medium or hot spice levels. Tables can be pre-booked, including for groups of 6 to 12.

Customer Review Summary
The pre-theatre menu draws the most praise, with diners calling it great value and pairing it with starters such as Bombay calamari, chicken chat and chicken tikka pakora. Mains named favourably include butter chicken, korma and a dopiaza one reviewer calls the best they have had. Several describe the staff as welcoming and attentive. Kitchen pace is the main complaint. A table of twelve waited a long time for starters and mains despite pre-ordering, and could not split the bill by family. A couple heading to the theatre waited for their mains and a drink refill, with one barman covering a full room. Their hot Sri Lanka dish arrived as a sweet korma with no heat, and by the time a remake was offered there was no time left, yet they were still charged for it. Another reviewer found the chicken and lamb in the curry chewy, though they liked the flavour. Front of house staff were described as courteous and apologetic. At one birthday table, staff brought out a cake with candles.

“Some of the best Indian food we've had anywhere. This place oozes class, decor is top notch and the service is sharp and very attentive. An absolute pleasure to dine at saba. I'd highly recommend it.”

“When we pre-booked our table (for 12 people) we were asked to pre-order our food the day before, which we happily did. We arrived at 6pm, it was Wednesday night and the restaurant was around 50% full. When the waiter took our order for drinks we asked if we could set up separate 'family' bills and were told 'he would check with the manager' (he didnt come back to us on that). We also, kindly let him know that non of our party wanted pickles/poppadoms. Our drinks arrived shortly after. After waiting over 45 minutes, one of the party members approached the man behind the bar (manager?) and asked for an update on how long we would wait for our starters to arrive. He struggled to raise his head from looking at his computer screen but managed a blunt reply merely stating they were very busy and it they would be out when they were ready. A further 10 minutes followed, and as we were almost ready to settle the bill for our drinks and leave, the starters eventually arrived. Some of the starters appeared to have been plated in a rush, but they all tasted amazing. We waited a further 30 minutes for our mains to arrive once the plates had been cleared away from our starters - again the food tasted amazing. Negatives: We were unable to split the bill between families as requested at the beginning of our dining experience, something that is freely acceptable in most restaurants these days. Although we had pre-ordered our food, this made no difference to the extended wait time for our starters to arrive. I dont think they are geared uo to cater for large parties, well certainly not in our case! Positives: The food tasted really nice as always.”

“Absolutely wonderful food and service at very reasonable prices. The food is wonderful, very filling and very satisfying. I always go for the medium spice meal which is more than spicy enough for me. It's very reasonably priced, the pre-theatre option is fantastic, two courses and a pint of beer for £20.90. The staff are very welcoming, friendly and supportive.”

“Sadly, our first ever visit to this establishment was ruined by the poor service from the kitchen and the bar. The front of house staff were efficient and courteous and were forever apologising, however, they were badly let down by their colleagues behind the scenes. I had booked a table for 5:45pm on Saturday as my wife and I were heading to the theatre for a 7:30pm start. After finishing our starters, we had to wait a full 25 minutes before our main meals came to the table. This was exacerbated by the fact that we also had to wait 10 minutes for a second drink as there was only 1 barman on catering for a full restaurant. When our main meals eventually were delivered to our table, my wife, who ordered a Sri Lanka (hot dish), was given a rather sweet Korma which had no 'heat' to it whatsoever. Again, the front of house staff were apologetic. They offered to remake the 'Sri Lanka' dish for my wife, however, as the service had been so slow in getting our meals to us in the first place, there wasn't sufficient time for that to happen as it was, by then, 7:12pm and we still had to make our way to the theatre. The really upsetting thing about this whole experience was that we were still charged for a dish that we didn't order! I fully understand that mistakes happen, however, the way that you remedy such mistakes is what makes you as a business. Sadly, on this occasion, we were let down badly by poor, slow service, which was made worse by still charging for a dish that was either made in error, or was not made to standard.”

“My family and I ate here yesterday after seeing the performance at the Empire Theatre. We all chose to order the pre theatre menu which was two courses for £14.95. My mam got the chicken chat starter (photo 6) and my dad got the chicken tikka pakora (photo 4). I chose to use the pre theatre menu but upgraded to the luxe starter and main for £19.95. My starter was Bombay calamari (photo 5). All starters were absolutely delicious and we didn’t wait too long for them but we also weren’t rushed. We then had our mains. My mam had chicken balti, dad had chicken bhuba and I had butter chicken. Again; we didn’t wait too long but we also weren’t rushed. Staff were very attentive. Definitely worth a go if you’re in Sunderland!”
