About Goa Sunderland

On Queen's Ave in Sunderland, Goa Sunderland is an Indian restaurant with window seating that looks out over the sea and promenade. The menu draws on dishes such as Chettinadu, Kadai, and Yahkhni Makoni, alongside a chef's specials section kept apart from the regular curries. A happy hour runs between 5 and 7pm, offering a two-course set menu. The restaurant opens daily for evening service, and reservations are recommended, especially on busier days. High chairs are available for families dining with young children, and the kitchen also prepares food for takeaway or delivery for those eating off site. The seven-dish core menu keeps the choice focused while the specials section gives some room to explore beyond the standard curry list.

Customer Review Summary

Diners repeatedly single out the staff as the reason they keep returning, calling them friendly and attentive even on busy nights. Close behind is the food, with several praising the Chicken Sashlick as a regular order, the Keralan Fish Curry called superb, and chef's specials topped with spinach or prawns singled out as memorable, alongside the prawn puri and samosas from other visits. A window seat overlooking the seafront and promenade is also mentioned as worth requesting, per one reviewer. Set against this is a recurring complaint that the food can be inconsistent: several found curries "flat" with no depth of flavor, a garlic and coriander naan arrived soggy rather than crisp, a Goan prawn curry lacked any coconut milk taste, and one described a sauce thickened with potato water. One diner felt overcharged during a promoted happy hour after extra fees for lamb and a flavored naan. One reviewer reports feeling unwell after their meal, wondering if parts weren't cooked through. Several suggest booking ahead for busier evenings, and one guest recalls leaving with a doggy bag of leftovers.

“The special menu is time limited may work for the restaurant but not for me. Pleasant enough place.”

“Went there expecting south Indian / Goan cuisine and was presented with a typical British Indian Cuisine. Very disappointed but the food was good for a North Indian style restaurant. Goan special Prawn curry supposedly having coconut milk, did not indeed taste of coconut milk😔. Even the Chef's special dishes felt like a boring curry that I could find in any other Indian restaurants. Same base, slightly altered ingredients. In that perspective it is quite pricey as well. There is a beautiful view of the ocean from the restaurant btw. So that's a plus. I'm being generous with 3 stars. Just not my cup of tea.”

“Not good at all, lots of potato water to thicken. Three dishes, only one made a grade, prawn madras not good, kozi lamb very poor. Given good ratings but tasted more like poor home cooking, nothing like Bangladeshi restaurant cuisine. A well, a poor meal means you will appreciate the restaurant you usually go to.”

“First time visit for a belated anniversary meal I'm not normally a massive fan of Indian food but hubby had been with work and assured me I would enjoy it …”
