About The Tap & Spile

The Tap & Spile, a pub on Peel Terrace in Stafford, sits on a side street just off a main road, with very little parking in the surrounding area. The kitchen runs a menu of around 16 dishes, opening with the Beer'd Up Mushrooms starter and taking in a beef and beer pie. Steaks are a focus, with sirloin, rib-eye and centre cut fillet cooked to the doneness each diner marks on a menu sheet, and peppercorn or Stilton sauce alongside. Waiters and waitresses serve at the tables, and the bar pours a choice of drinks, with house water brought in a jug with ice and lemon. A step-free, wheelchair-accessible entrance helps visitors with mobility needs, and outdoor seating suits those who prefer to eat outside. Dogs are welcome. The pub opens Wednesday to Sunday and closes Mondays and Tuesdays, and reservations are recommended. A quiz night runs for regulars who want more than dinner.

Customer Review Summary

Steak dominates nearly every account here, with diners repeatedly reporting it cooked exactly to the level they asked for, tender and, in one case, smokey centre cut fillet paired with Stilton sauce and scooped chips. Peppercorn sauce draws its own praise for flavour, and one reviewer enjoyed the tick-box menu that let them mark their preference themselves. Close behind, the Beer'd up mushrooms are called divine, and the beef and beer pie earns notes for melting pastry and plenty of meat inside. Others single out crispy onion rings, the steak burger, garlic bread with the trimmings and the choice of drinks. Several describe the pub as transformed from its former dingy state, with friendly staff who were good with children, and one recalls live music at a party there. A four star review reports a long wait for food and prices on the high side given the limited parking nearby. One diner remembers house water arriving in a jug with ice and a slice of lemon.

This place is just off a main road, so could easily be missed. But if you can try to make it as you will be happy with your choice. Small things such as house water came in a jug with a glass full of ice with a slice of lemon. This is not something that others make this sort of effort and also try the garlic bread with the trimmings- delicious. We both had steak, sirloin and rib-eye. Both done to our requested cook level. Would definitely recommend this to others and hope you will also enjoy the meal(s). Staff were very attentive and helpful which also makes a enjoyable visit.

Had an amazing experience! The steak was cooked well, the onion rings were crispy and the steak burger was exceptional. My girlfriend and I were really pleased with both our meals, and I'll definitely come again if I find myself in Stafford again.

Very tender and smokey flavoured centre cut fillet. Hardly ever be able to find this tasty beef elsewhere. If you are travelling from South England, try this plate with Stilton sauce and scooped chips. Very reasonable price with this quality and great staff.

One of the best restaurants I've been in UK. Simple, cosy, clean and friendly. The staff is amazing and the food tastes excellent. I recommend to everyone to stop by and get one of their Steak with some peppercorn sauce, or the smoked bacon …

How this listing is sourced

Where the data comes from
Name, address, hours, contact details, amenities, ratings and review counts come from the business's publicly available profile data — not from the owner and not from paid submissions.
How it stays current
Listings are re-checked in batches against their public profile, and anything reported as wrong is corrected at the source rather than patched on the page.
How it is ranked
Placement is never sold. Every business on the page is ordered and compared using the same public signals, so an owner cannot pay to move up.
