Customer Review Summary

The complaints are about the kitchen and order accuracy. One diner found the triple cooked chips dark, limp and watery and the batter on thicker fish under cooked, and disliked a defensive reply to feedback. A Sunday lunch order arrived without the requested greens, though a discount followed unasked. Another table found red snapper sold out and only one Barnsley chop left, and a family found the lemonade flavourless until returned to the bar a second time, with limited vegetarian choice noted.

“On my canal boat I popped in for just a beer on a busy bank holiday. What an atmosphere! I was made as welcome as if I was a long standing regular and as if I was spending lots of money. Staff were chatting to locals as they walked round serving food and drinks at tables. Truly one of the most friendly and welcoming pub I've ever had the pleasure to visit. The food is reputed to be excellent and judging by the number eating mid afternoon this must be true. I'm not one given to superlatives but this pub is truly a must!”

“The venue was great as was the service. The main issue for my low score was the very limited menu. Our first choice of Red Snapper had sold out , then our second choice of Barnsley chop , they only had one of. It would seem that they operate with a low stock of ingredients. We were booked for 7.45 and expected availability of at least one of our choices. It was a special occasion so it put a bit of a damper on our night. I wouldn't advise anyone to book at 7.45 as they finish serving at 8.30 on a Wednesday. Get in early if you want a special meal. For the price paid of 70 pounds for one course for two with wine I would have expected better choices. The fish pie substitute was nice and the "last" chop was enjoyed by my husband. When I got home I was very ill. Not sure if the meal caused the upset stomach. But it was the last thing I ate.”

“I've been staying at the dog for 2 years whenever I'm in Stafford and I have to say, the staff are the loveliest people I have encountered at hotels they always make me feel so welcome and they're always so lovely and helpful. I am now moving to Australia and can say with pure sincerity that I will never stay at a more welcoming and wonderful place. Im certain that Gordon Ramsey works in the kitchen because the food is incredible everytime. if you're in the area please stop in. I know that Bethany and Frankie will take great care of you and I will be sending them my best wishes from the other side of the world. Long live the Dog and Doublet, my favourite place in Britain.”

“We only stopped in for a quick snack. The sandwich was excellent, likewise the beer. The garden tables are beginning to show their age, but all in all a very nice place to break the journey.”

“We called for lunch and had chicken tenders with pickled jalapeños and szichuan sauce and the salmon crumpet to start. Both were delicious and delivered promptly. Mains were pan fried red Snapper with new potatoes, samphire and capers and the steak & onion pie with rosemary roasted carrots & kale with chips. Desert was the Bakewell tart and lemon drizzle cake. Everything was perfect with this meal and we will definitely return. We did not stay here SS it’s only 12 miles from home.”
