Quick info
About Tang's
Tang's is a Chinese restaurant at 127 Above Bar St in Southampton, run by a local family and built around all-you-can-eat buffets at lunch and in the evening. Guests order the buffet at the table in rounds, starters first and then mains, and can order more afterwards. Tables need a minimum of two people. The buffet includes chicken wings and spring rolls, and Cantonese roast duck is among the dishes. A separate lunch menu runs alongside the buffet for those who prefer to order that way. Buffet food is eaten on site only and cannot be packed up to take away.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the all-you-can-eat buffet, with the duck dishes singled out, from a duck starter to Cantonese roast duck, and chicken wings and spring rolls close behind. Several describe ordering seven starters and a handful of mains and leaving with a good amount of food, and one praises the vegetarian menu. At lunch, ginger chicken with rice and vegetable soup is described as close to home cooking, and beef with peppers and black bean sauce is called tasty, though the capital ribs were only ok. Service draws mixed reactions. Some find staff smiling, polite and helpful, while others report a green tea mix-up and chips arriving instead of chopsticks. The sharpest complaint concerns closing time. Two reviewers describe a late buffet party told the restaurant was about to close, then refused takeaway boxes for leftovers. One says the kitchen's old-oil taste ruined sweet and sour chicken, and another calls the special fried rice and side of beef low quality. One diner also notes a service fee on the bill that they asked to have removed.

“I went there today for their lunch menu. I had the Capital Ribs and beef with peppers and black bean sauce. I found the ribs a bit could have been a bit better, but they were ok. The main dish was really tasty. Great value for lunch time deal. The restaurant is very inviting, good ambience, staff very polite and helpful. Please see photos”

“The dinner buffet was extremely delicious, especially the chicken wings and spring rolls. There were many different options available. The waitress, a young lady, provided excellent service. She always smiled and was always ready to help. What I want to say is that one of the tables arrived very late. At that time, the store was about to close, but the owner still received them. The closing time of the store was clearly written on the window or clearly marked on Google Maps. They chose Baffet, but the owner was about to close the store. The waiter kindly reminded them and was very friendly, but after learning that the store was about to close, they didn't have a good attitude and demanded to have their food packed. At this time, another person, presumably a staff member from the kitchen, came down and told them that Baffet couldn't be packed. I think I can understand this point. If the buffet could be packed, I could eat in a restaurant that might go bankrupt... Obviously, they didn't accept this and continued to ask the young waitress questions like how to handle the remaining food to make things difficult. This young girl had an embarrassed expression on her face but still smiled and served.”

“Very Bad Customer Service!!! We arrived at the restaurant around 1 pm and ordered the buffet. The starter was served immediately, which we appreciated, and it was excellent. However, only a few minutes later, the server informed us that the restaurant closes at 2:30 pm and advised us to order quickly. We had not been told this beforehand if we had known, we would not have chosen the buffet, as it’s impossible to prepare and enjoy it properly in such a short time, we would have ordered a simple food that we would have finish before they close. Our main dishes didn’t arrive until around 2:15 pm, leaving us only 15 minutes to eat an entire buffet, which was unreasonable. By 2:30 pm, having eaten barely a quarter of the food, we politely asked if the remaining food could be packed for takeaway. A staff member responded very rudely, insisting that buffet food cannot be packed and must be eaten on-site. While we understand that policy, it should have been communicated when we ordered especially given their early closing time. Had we known, we would have chosen simpler dishes we could finish before closing. Instead, we were spoken to disrespectfully, the remaining food was essentially wasted, and we went home still hungry after paying £39 for food we barely ate. Overall, it was a very disappointing experience. I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant !”

“I'm from Thailand and before coming to this restaurant, I had eaten Chinese food in London. But when I tried this place, I was more impressed with both the quality and the price. This restaurant is a buffet, and the food is freshly prepared, dish by dish. The food is very good, especially the Cantonese roast duck. I must say it's really worth it.”
