About Retro Cafe
Retro Cafe is a cafe in Southampton at 34 Bedford Pl, serving an all-day breakfast menu with vegan and gluten-free options, plus coffee and milkshakes. The Monster Full English Breakfast sits alongside a small breakfast option, so there is a full plate and a lighter one. Eggs benedict comes on a brioche bun, and Biscoff pancakes sit next to the homemade pancakes. A record player plays music in the room, and board games such as top trumps are on hand for anyone who wants something to play over a meal or a drink. Hot drinks, including a dark hot chocolate, come with a custard cream biscuit. A waitress provides table service. The cafe is a short walk from the university campus.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return for the full English breakfast, with one calling the Monster Full English the best they know of in Southampton and another praising the egg. Close behind are the eggs benedict on a brioche bun, the biscoff pancakes, and an 8oz cheeseburger, all described as fresh, generous and good value. Coffee arrives with a biscuit, and one reviewer loves the dark hot chocolate. Several describe friendly, welcoming staff and table service, with food arriving without a long wait. Reviewers also mention board games such as top trumps, a record player playing Queen, and a cozy feel that makes it a nice place to read while waiting. One reviewer who enjoyed their full English still raised a concern about hygiene, noting the cook wore a baseball cap and no apron or hair net and repeatedly wiped a hand on his clothing. A visitor on overnight stays chose eating here twice over a hotel breakfast, and another asked to swap two sausages for two hash browns on a small breakfast and got it.

“This is a midium sized cafe with Plents of indoor and outdoor seating. No, or limited food hygine shown my man cooking meals. No hear net, or apron. only waring basebal cap and everyday clothing. Also man was constantly wiping back of hand of clothing. However saying this the Food was cooked well, I enjoyed my Full English Breakfast. Great costomer, and table service shown by waitress. A short walk from Univercity cappus”

“Had a really lovely breakfast here! I ordered the eggs benedict and it was genuinely the best I've had. Poached eggs were perfect (no snotty white and a perfectly runny yolk) and I think it was served on a brioche bun which was a really nice change! My daughter had the biscoff pancakes and these were amazing too - fluffy and chunky with biscoff and sauce between all the layers. Great drinks too. Service was excellent - chirpy but not intrusive and everything was delivered to our table in good time. Nice touch with the custard cream biscuits with the hot drinks. We were only passing through Southampton but there was a steady stream of locals in there too.”

“⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Stumbled across this lovely little spot in Southampton and had a great time. I had the cheeseburger — a proper 8oz beef patty in a brioche bun with fries — and it was excellent: generous, fresh, and full of flavour. The value for money is fantastic; portions are satisfying and the prices are very reasonable for the quality you get. The menu has loads to offer too — all-day breakfast, homemade fluffy pancakes, burgers, plenty of vegan and gluten-free options, plus everything from coffee to milkshakes. A warm, friendly café with something for everyone. If you're in Southampton, definitely stop by — I'll be back!”

“Another 5 star experience ths morning, which if I'm being fair is better than a few I remember in previous years. The staff seemed well on top of everything this morning and the Monster Full English Breakfast that I enjoyed is the best that I know of in Southampton. I love this little cafe.”
