About George's Cafe & Restaurant

Breakfast anchors the menu at George's Cafe & Restaurant, a cafe on Church St in Southampton, where bubble and squeak sits alongside an all day English breakfast for anyone wanting more than the standard cooked plate. Those plates come with bacon, hash browns and eggs, while the wider menu stretches to omelettes and roasts, all cooked in house. The team serves at the table and will take requests such as a smaller portion. No bookings are taken, so customers walk in and find a table. A step-free, wheelchair-accessible entrance means visitors with mobility needs can get in without assistance, and high chairs make room for families with young children. Trading runs Monday to Saturday in the daytime, with Sundays closed.

  • Anita Macdonald
“Visited for lunch and husband had large all day breakfast, absolutely loved it. Nice big doorstep slice of toast with butter & side of chips included. I had an omelette with salad, I wanted a slightly smaller meal which was no problem for them, they did a two egg one instead of four and it was still plenty big enough. Real community cafe with excellent service provided by the staff, extremely hard working and they make sure you have everything you need. Thoroughly enjoyed it & would recommend to anyone.”

Customer Review Summary

Breakfast is what reviewers return to most, with the English breakfast and the large all day breakfast singled out, and the bubble and squeak called lovely by more than one diner. Close behind are the generous portions and low prices, which come up again and again alongside descriptions of proper home cooked food served hot and freshly cooked. Reviewers also mention a pork roast, a light bites board and a lasagna one diner plans to try. Staff are described as friendly, welcoming and hard working, and one reviewer notes gluten free options. One diner asked for a smaller meal and got a two egg omelette instead of four without fuss. The one sharply negative account describes a long wait, hard egg yolks, burnt hash browns and bacon like jerky, while another reviewer found the bacon too thick but called it personal preference. Another visitor described the cafe as a real community cafe, tidy and clean, where a friend group from Poland left happy after trying British classics.
