About Hussey’s Fish & Chips

Hussey's Fish & Chips is a fish and chips restaurant on Sandbeck Ave in Skegness, where tables are set inside beach huts and chips arrive in sandcastle buckets, with kids' meals served in a little bucket and spade that children take home. The kitchen fries fish in batter with freshly cut chips, offered alongside mushy peas, gravy or curry sauce, and a platter brings together battered sausage, fishcake, haddock and chips. Jacket potatoes, paninis and desserts fill out the menu, and a gluten-free menu and an allergy menu can be requested. Breakfast is part of the day too, and the dining room looks out to the sea. Reservations are recommended, though the team seats walk-ins at the sign inside and brings food to the table. High chairs suit families with young children, outdoor seating gives the option of eating in the open air, and a step-free entrance helps visitors with mobility needs, with toilets located upstairs. The doors open daily.

Customer Review Summary

Freshly cooked fish draws the most repeated praise, described as lovely and white under crispy, light batter, with fresh cut chips cooked just right. Close behind is the lunch platter, one visitor calling its battered sausage among the tastiest they have had, served alongside a fishcake, haddock and curry sauce, while a diner with gluten intolerance singles out the gluten-free fish and chips. Others mention mushy peas, gravy, and a small but sensible menu running to jacket potatoes and paninis, and the seaside decor recurs, with tables set inside beach huts. Complaints surface too: several note food arriving slowly on busy days, and two say portions do not match the price, with one also flagging the cost of cold drinks. One family describes an abrupt, unwelcoming greeting and a long wait, and another reviewer reports a confrontational exchange over a child's nut allergy despite having been given an allergy menu. Kids' meals arrive in a little bucket with a spade to take home, and chips come in sandcastle buckets.

“Absolutely disgusted by the way we were treated. The very first thing I did when entering was explain to the staff member that my daughter has a severe nut allergy. This can be checked on cctv. We were even given an allergy menu accordingly so there was absolutely no confusion about the situation. Despite this, we were later accused of not informing the waitress and of not caring about our child’s welfare and safety which is an outrageous thing to say to any parent. The member of staff who served us, an older blonde lady around 65, was incredibly rude and confrontational. Her manner, tone, and the way she spoke to me were completely unacceptable. Instead of showing understanding and professionalism regarding a serious medical allergy we were made to feel blamed and humiliated. We often eat out as a family and have never once been met with such a disgraceful attitude towards my daughter’s allergy which is something completely beyond her control and has never been an issue in any other establishment. A child’s allergy should be treated with care and seriousness, not met with accusations and hostility. We left shocked and extremely upset by the whole experience. I will also be making a complaint to food standards as this situation was handled so poorly and could have had serious consequences. I strongly suggest management speaks to this staff member seriously about the way she speaks to customers and ensures staff are properly trained on the severity of nut allergies and the importance of handling them responsibly and respectfully.”

“Worst restaurant myself and family have ever been to (wife & 2 children) on arrival we were not made to feel welcome at all. The waitress standing by the (wait here to be seated sign) seemed to be in a bad mood, we asked her if she had a table for the four of us. Rather than her greeting us, had no smile. She pointed at a table by the window, we said this one. She just nodded vigorously, quite rude and abrupt. Came back and dropped two menus on our table and walked off. At this point, my wife wanted to leave and find somewhere else. However our two children were very tired and hungry, being out at the fairground and was very hot outside. We decided to stay, my wife took my children to wash their hands, toilets located upstairs. She told me they had plenty more seating around the corner from where the waitress had plonked us, right by the front entrance, where people were coming and going. We wouldn’t have minded being sat there, if that was the only option available. We decided to move to another table, the young guy who did come, and take our order was very kind and polite. We couldn’t fault him, he was really nice. To make matters worse, the waitress from earlier. Came through with another family and sat them on a table opposite ours, but she was completely different with them. All smiles, and gave them their menus individually. Why had we not received the same treatment? After having our food order taken, it took 50mins for the food to arrive. My children kept asking when would their food be coming. When it eventually arrived, wasn’t the best quality or quantity for what you pay for. At this point we were starving, so ate it. Very disappointing experience, a shame as the restaurant is very nice inside. But needless to say, we definitely won’t be returning there.”

“Lovely meal, great choice. Fish lovely and white, great crispy batter. Fresh cut chips, good tasting Mushy peas and Gravy. Only annoyance was cost of cold drinks. Food took 30 mins, but it was busy. As far as rating, one of the best we have found in Skegness and will go again.”

“Lovely place serving good tasty food staff nice and pleasant. Only thing I will say is portions aren't quite the size for what you pay for. But if you are looking for good food in the area you can't go far wrong going here.”

“Easter Sunday was busy but they accommodated us without booking, typical family restaurant. Service was a little slow but they were busy, portions were adequate for the average person, fish tasted freshly cooked. Overall a nice meal, tables inside beach huts was a lovely decorative feature along with chips served in sandcastle buckets.”
