Customer Review Summary
Reviewers split sharply on the kitchen, and the steak and ale pie is the dish praised most clearly, with one diner noting so much beef and another praising a son's burger. Others enjoyed chicken risotto, chicken salad, garlic mushrooms and penne arrabbiata, and say portions were generous. The complaints are more numerous and specific. The duck draws criticism twice, once for arriving drowning in gravy instead of crispy, and another reviewer found a different risotto bland and sloppy. Chips tasted of old oil, a rump steak arrived burnt and was remade after a long wait, and the tofu and gnocchi were called bland. A few felt dishes were heated up rather than homemade. Service is mixed. Some waited so long they went to the bar to order, and one family said a server told a child to pack away her homemade sandwich before they were moved to the lounge. Yet bar and waiting staff are repeatedly described as friendly and apologetic, and in one case the worst dish came off the bill.

“During our stay we thought we would try the restaurant after going in town the last time we was here. Food was delicious starters were Vegetable soup and Garlic Mushrooms Mains were Caesar Salad and Tomato and Arrabbiata Penne. Portions were a decent size that we were unable to finish it all. Staff very friendly.”

“From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt a little uncomfortable. The male waiter greeted us in a way that made it seem as though our presence had caught him by surprise. We then had to wait quite some time, eventually having to go to the bar ourselves to ask someone to come and take our order. After our order was finally taken, we noticed that several customers who had arrived after us were served before us. When we eventually asked the waiter about our food, we were told that it was on its way. Although the food itself was fine and the staff were apologetic, the overall experience was disappointing. Unfortunately, the poor service and the uncomfortable initial impression meant that we left feeling let down. We would not recommend this restaurant. Dr Malik”

“The food is actaully disgusting - do not eat here, order and Uber eats or warm up some bread on a radiator. We had the duck, bao buns and chicken tenders, i literally feel sick”

“Saturday 11th April 2026 7pm - Having travelled 2 and a half hours for an event and paid £200 to stay a single night at the Hollins Hall Hotel, my husband and children were looking forward to a quiet bite to eat before bed. Unfortunately they were left feeling embarrassed and disrespected when the young, female server asked my 4 year old daughter mid way through her food to stop eating immediately and pack away her homemade sandwich before my husband and 9 year old son would be offered any service. The tone and manner in which they were spoken to was both humiliating and made them feel like second class citizens rather than paying customers. When my husband went on to explain that she was having a difficult evening and didn’t want anything from the menu, they were forced to move to the lounge area and served their dinner sitting at a coffee table in reception. If I had not taken the car to a separate event they could have simply gone elsewhere, unfortunately they were stuck as the hotel does not offer room service. Having dined at Michelin restaurants and other 5* establishments we have never encountered such horrid treatment to a 4 year old. A little understanding would have been appreciated as her quietly eating a sandwich was not doing any harm and would not have been the end of the world. In the restaurant dogs are allowed to roam freely around everyone’s table, yet a little child can’t eat a sandwich. A little compassion wouldn’t have gone amiss, or at least have a better level of communication with customers. Absolutely appalling.”
