About The Wetherby Whaler
The Wetherby Whaler is a fish and chips restaurant on Otley Rd in Leeds, where a pianist plays live piano while diners eat. Chandeliers hang in the dining room. Fish and chips is the main dish, served with haddock and mushy peas. Coeliacs can order gluten-free fish, chips and mushy peas, so a table with mixed dietary needs can share the same meal. Desserts follow a traditional British line, with sherry trifle, treacle sponge, Black Forest sundae and cherry pie on the list. The restaurant operates as part of a group with sites in Wetherby, York, Pudsey, Wakefield, Outwood and Guiseley. It was formerly Harry Ramsden's before taking the Wetherby Whaler name.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips is what reviewers return for, with several calling it excellent and good value, and one praising gluten-free fish, chips and mushy peas for coeliacs. Many arrive nostalgic for the days when it was Harry Ramsden's. Close behind is the live pianist and chandeliers, which reviewers say give the dining room a nice atmosphere, though one finds the piano can get overpowering in volume. Traditional desserts also draw comment, including a sherry trifle, Black Forest sundae, cherry pie and treacle sponge. Takeaway is described as efficient, but the complaints are specific. One reviewer found the haddock batter would not stick to the fish. Another got a small microwaved pie with small chips in a medium box, and was told that is how it comes. One takeaway customer was disappointed with the sharer portion, and another found young staff unresponsive to a thank you. Several still praise friendly, quick service, and one reviewer describes finishing a huge fish, a pot of tea and a mega portion of ice cream.

“Bought fish & chips here for the first time in years its not something we eat at all often, we used the takeaway, the meal was lovely however the staff was miserable you expect when you say thankyou and have a nice evening to get a response but youngsters today just look at you like they have never been taught manners...hard to understand why you would work in a customer faced environment? Entitled youths are not my thing as manners cost nothing, but the meal was nice.”

“The chips were fine, but the fish was awful. Ordered regular haddock and the batter was not stuck to the fish. This usually happens when the fish is too moist ( possibly frozen ?) and steams inside the batter. Usually eat at the Pudsey branch where both fish and chips are both perfect. Harry Ramsden will be turning in his grave. BTW. I recommended mushy peas as I was unable to post my review without recommending something.”

“Always a great place to enjoy fish and chips in a lovely setting. The chandeliers and live piano music give it a really nice atmosphere, while the staff are always friendly and pleasant. We’ve never had a disappointing meal here. There may be places closer to us, but this is the one we prefer coming back to.”

“This was my first time in the Restaurant since it was called Harry Ramsden. We use to visit whenever we stayed up with our relatives in Bradford. I can confirm that the Fish and Chips, the young staff and atmosphere was EXCELLENT! From ordering the food to getting the food was super quick and efficient. If only there was something as good in the Cambridge area. Thank you Wetherby Whaler for maintaining the highest quality of food, and thank you for bringing back fond memories.”
