Hard Lane Fish Bar
Quick info
About Hard Lane Fish Bar
Hard Lane Fish Bar is a fish and chips takeaway on Hard Ln in Sheffield, taking orders for collection with online ordering also available. Fish and chips come in small and large sizes, and the menu extends to battered sausages and a Chicken Meal. Curry sauce and mushy peas are offered on the side. Families with young children can make use of high chairs while waiting. Orders are taken on a walk-in basis, with no reservations, and a wait for food is common, especially given the limited opening days. The shop runs Wednesday to Saturday and stays closed Monday, Tuesday and Sunday. This shorter week means planning a visit around the open days matters more than at a takeaway open every day.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips draw the strongest praise, with reviewers repeatedly calling the chips among the best they've had, crisp outside and fluffy inside, and the fish consistently fresh. The homemade fishcake and battered sausages also get singled out, and the "Chicken Meal" comes recommended by a longtime regular, along with curry sauce as a favorite. Several describe generous portions, quick online ordering, and friendly, chatty service, though most agree there's usually a wait, which a few say is worth it. A recurring set of complaints pulls the other way: multiple diners report overcooked batter, greasy chips, and undercooked or soggy cod, one describes stone-cold, watery mushy peas, and another cites shrinking portion sizes, an underfilled curry sauce pot, and a hard-centered chip on a £31 order. One visit involved a forgotten order of sausages alongside a long wait. Loyal customers describe returning weekly for years without a bad meal, even as they acknowledge the negative reviews exist.

“Best fish and chips in the area never had a bad experience in over 30 visits to this place a little pricey but worth every penny”
- Dominic Sanderson
“Overcooked Yorkshire cakes, potato was thick and fish minimal, batter was overcooked. Chips extremely greasy. Would not go back”
- Gemma Graham
“Been a few weeks since ordering and I'm not sure what's happened. The small fish is no bigger than a jumbo fishfinger and even the large fish is smaller than previously. Equally the large chips is a smaller portion and the large peas and curry sauce must have been given by mistake in a small pot as they didn't feed 2. The odd chip was hard in the middle. Really disappointed for £31”
- Kirsty Tunnard
“Absolutely disgusting. The chips and fish were tasteless. The mushy peas had never been mushy very watery, rock hard and stone cold. Will not be recommending or revisiting.”
