  “Meal for two last Saturday at Venus. Service and food was excellent. We very much enjoyed it, a high standard traditional restaurant, silver service, wide ranging menu at realistic prices, generous portions with a great atmosphere. Need to book in advance as this is highly popular. If you know, you know! Will be back soon.”

  “I tend not to send public reviews as I prefer to email. However, you do not give out an email address for some reason. I was looking forward to our Sunday Lunch at the Venus. I'd heard it was good. First the good points. The venue is very clean, nice linen on the tables and the serving staff are super efficient which you need if you are to turn the numbers over. However, the meal didn't feel rushed. I'm sorry to report that the both found the food very disappointing. We both chose the Chicken Liver Pate, which came with very ordinary supermarket-style toasted sliced white bread. I had the end crust off the loaf so it was hard to mistake. My partner ordered the lamb, and I ordered the beef. Both were way overdone. The lamb had been carved with the grain making the portion tough in texture. The beef looked like it had been prepared in a factory and oven braised in gravy. Just a block of grey tissue with no marbling or slightest trace of fat offering little in the way of flavour. The "roast potatoes" were served whole, and I guess these were factory prepared and frozen, lacking any colour. No crispiness. A leathery exterior opened out to a mush of watery potato (as if it had been frozen and then cooked) with no fluffiness or flavour. The veg again looked like a frozen selection bought in a bag from Macro. Not too hard to keep it seasonal, but peas in March? The cauliflower cheese came with a pasty, bland sauce, and the veg within varied between over and undercooked depending on which floret was cut into. The gravy, while plentiful, was heavily corn-floured and hadn't been near a roast which flags that you are not cooking any joints of meat. On this showing we chose not to order a dessert. It's a shame. You were busy, the place is popular and obviously running successfully, but the food for us fell well short of a Sunday lunch at home, or even in quality of the Toby Carvery in Rotherham. No doubt you have enough custom not to be concerned with negative comments, which is fine, but the food at Venus offers nothing to encourage us to want to return any time soon. I thought you should know. What you do with the opinion is, of course, up to you.”
