About The Diamond Kitchen

The Diamond Kitchen is a cafe in Sheffield, run from a small kitchen inside the University's Diamond Building. Its Grill & Go range of burritos, wraps and bowls gives students and staff a quick lunch between classes. Panini is also sold, and customers carry it from the till to a separate counter to be toasted. Chai and coffee are served, and coloured stickers mark milk choices such as oat, soy and decaf. Orders often involve a wait, and there is little room to stand once you have ordered. The cafe is open Monday to Friday, daytime only, and closed on Saturdays and Sundays. It accepts the GeniUS card for payment.

Customer Review Summary

Grill & Go is the draw reviewers praise most, with one calling the burrito well sized and very tasty, another singling out the burrito bowls and wraps, and a third finding the food good quality though not cheap. Friendly staff come up close behind, described as lovely and caring, with one noting they take time to explain food options. A chocolate croissant is called consistently good, and a cheese and onion panini and the chai also earn praise, while the coffee draws mixed reactions, from decent to not so good. Complaints centre on service and cost. Several describe abrupt or rude staff and stingy portions, and reviewers find the sandwiches and extra fillings expensive for students. Others mention takeaway coffee arriving without a lid, drinks in single-use cups, and having to carry a panini to a separate counter to be toasted. One reviewer recalls being shouted at to wait while their drink order was typed into the till.

“Usually I love coming here to get a cheese and onion panini. Great chai, coffee quality not so. Several of the staff come across as very abrupt. You have to take your panini to another counter after you have bought if you want it to be toasted, and when it is busy it is extremely hard to tell whether you are cutting in or not. Staff seem reluctant to toast sandwiches even though this is their system. I was once shouted at by a member of staff when ordering my drink because I said it slightly too quick. When I slowed down to tell her again she shouted WAIT! As she was typing it on the till. I tried to joke with her and apologized but quickly realised this was not the tone she was going for. Maybe she was new? Either way, not acceptable service, which is frustrating as most of the saff are absolutely lovely.”

“If it’s possible to inherit what does high street chains do, which is to use colored stickers to distinguish modifiers such as oat milk, soy milk and decaf etc. this is better.”

“Staffs are stingy with portions, unpleasant, rather rude many of the times and not ‘student-friendly’ for the fact that it’s in a ‘college-library’. Not sure why they choose to be like this when kindness costs them nothing. It was not like this before. They were very approachable and friendly people almost just a year ago..not sure what’s changed. Very disappointed time after time here. Not recommended unless you’re prepared to put yourself through this experience.”

“Had a very nice burrito. Well sized and very tasty. Service was quick enough and polite. Also the background music is a nice volume, not too loud.”
