Quick info
About The Chine Inn
The Chine Inn is a pub on Chine Ave in Shanklin, dating back to 1621 and tied to the days of smuggling. It sits mid way up the cliff, overlooking Shanklin Chine, Sandown Bay and the sea, so a drink here comes with a view of both. Inside, several rooms and a conservatory give visitors a choice of places to sit, and a wishing well stands among the furnishings. The bar pours a range of local brewery ales. The small menu of homemade food is served through the afternoon and covers sandwiches, soups and a ploughman's. Dogs are welcome, and the team keeps treats on hand along with blankets or towels for them to lie on. The pub runs on a walk-in basis. Live music, including a blues band, plays on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the position overlooking Shanklin Chine and the sea, with the friendly staff and landlady close behind. Diners praise the local ales and a good beer selection, and one mentions wine, hot chocolate and coffee. Food gets a smaller share of the comments, with a small homemade menu of sandwiches, wraps and soups described as good value, and one reviewer calling the ploughman's with its generous cheese selection, sausage roll and homemade-tasting chutney outstanding. Several visited only for drinks. Dog owners mention treats, blankets and a bed for their dog, and others describe the old-world, quirky interior with a wishing well, different seating rooms, a conservatory and covered outdoor seating. A few mention live music, including a blues band. The only caveat is that several reviewers did not try the food, so comments on it are limited. One reviewer returned several times during a stay in Shanklin, and another was handed a bed for their dog within minutes of arriving.

“Just had lunch here, have been wanting to visit for a while as the pub is in such a unique position, overlooking both the sea and the Chine and has been shut up until quite recently. It has a friendly, real pub atmosphere and the food was excellent. The ploughman's was outstanding, with ham, a generous cheese selection and an excellent sausage roll. A nice dressed salad was served in a separate bowl and the chutney was really good, tasted like homemade. I prefer a small, well thought out menu using fresh, quality ingredients to the endless procession of toasties, panini's and jacket spuds with 'salad garnish', (bit of iceberg and couple of slices of unripe tomato) that you tend to get nowadays. So we were well satisfied and will return!”

“Can't speak on the food as we didn't have any but it's an absolute gem of a pub. Nestled in a little hideaway and over looking the chine and the sea. The staff are chatty and friendly, good beer and very olde world inside. We visited several times while in Shanklin, an absolute find.”

“Just popped in for drinks, great service and the drinks were great. Great view also from the outside seating area..”

“Giving 5 stars for all. Food is a basic menu at date of review, sandwiches, wraps, soups etc so no big 'mains'. Food is good and priced well, I would also say it suits the inn quite well having afternoon food service (12-5) which is when this area is busiest with dog walkers and general visitors to the chine area. Service and atmosphere is spot on, great staff and a friendly atmosphere between them and the customers. Pubs are hard work, it is tiring and very hard after a long week to start another week and go again so I always treat staff well myself, good people/staff will then look after you! I would suggest here for Coastal Path walkers, it is quiet enough for a quick drink and the food menu is perfect if you still have miles to do. Local ales - They do a good range of local brewery ales so visitors to the island should head here to taste a few of those local ales/beers. View over the sea is great which also looks down towards the chine itself. Plenty of seating inside, different rooms with different feels/lighting to suit, two seperate seating areas outside as well (one of which is covered if it's raining) Give this place a go, you will enjoy a good pint here!”

“The Chine Inn is one of the oldest pubs on the Island (dating back to 1621), relating back to the days of smuggling. It is situated in a unique position overlooking Shanklin Chine and Sandown Bay. Any and all are welcome to grab a pew and relax with a drink - embrace the charm and atmosphere of the old Inn. Dog friendly - on a leash or very well behaved”
