Quick info
About The Anchor Fish & Chips
On Sandside in Scarborough, The Anchor Fish & Chips is a fish & chips restaurant at 37 Sandside that cooks its fish and chips with haddock only, and no cod. A large portion comes with two pieces of fish, and salt and vinegar are provided for the fish and chips, with ketchup sold as extra sachets. Spam fritters and a battered sausage buttie sit on the menu beside the fish. Orders are placed at the counter, where customers receive a ticket and are called when food and drinks are ready. Inside, a nautical theme runs through the room, and the pictures of old Scarborough on the walls change over time. Tables have a view of the bay and harbour. The restaurant is open daily.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often praise the haddock, describing white, meaty flakes in a light, crispy batter, with chips that several call nicely cooked and a large fish and chips that comes as two fish. Diners also mention a battered sausage buttie and spam fritters, called greasy and lovely, along with a beer alongside. Staff are described as friendly and smiling, and the dining room, toilets and sea views draw repeated comments for being clean, with old photographs of Scarborough on the walls. The caveats are specific. One reviewer found the fish slightly overcooked, dry and thin, another felt there was more batter than fish, and a third called the vinegar watered down and the prices high, noting no cod is sold. Service is described as chaotic at the counter, with one reviewer waiting about fifteen minutes after a lost ticket. Another was charged for ketchup while the customer behind received a handful free, and one mentions a lad clearing tables swearing regularly.

“Absolutely delicious and crispy fish and chips, not soggy at all! Beautiful restaurant, really nice atmosphere. Plenty of table both inside and outside. Fairly priced and the large fish and chips is massive, it comes two fishes. Service is outstanding from all of the staff, always with a smile. Very clean as well. Definitely worth trying! They were open a bit late today thanks to the beautiful weather.”

“Cracking sit in chip shop. Only thing I would slightly criticise is the fish seemed to have more batter than fish but over all ot was very nice. Would recommend”

“First time eating here, this was the only chippy open until 8pm! We both ordered fish and chips, not too long a wait, very tasty, we polished them off! Immaculate toilets. We liked looking at the pictures on the walls which kept changing, of old Scarborough.”

“A regular favourite of mine in Scarborough. The food is always fantastic. Freshly prepared fish and chips ensure the food is piping hot. The portions are good and definitely fill you up. The fish is some of the best around with chunky white flakes wrapped in a crisp, golden batter. The chips are cooked to perfection and taste exactly how you want them to. This is seaside fish and chips at its best. The service can be a little chaotic. The youngsters on the counter aren't always the most organised or enthusiastic so sometimes you can be waiting a little while longer than you would like. On my last visit, they lost my ticket so I was waiting a good fifteen minutes for my food. Still, it was worth the wait. Despite this minor complaint, the next time I go to Scarborough, this will be my first port of call. Great food. Well worth a visit.”

“Went here for fish and chips after a day out in York, I don’t think they could have watered down the vinegar anymore than what they have. They don’t sell cod only haddock chips were ok, 4 kids serving . I’ll do more research if I come to Scarborough in the future!!! Over priced for what we had, but hey that’s rip off Britain!”
