About Golden Star
Golden Star is a Chinese takeaway at 66 Fitzwarren St in Salford, run as a counter-service shop with no seating, so every order is taken away. The menu mixes Chinese dishes with fish and chips, so one counter serves both styles. Chow mein comes in pork and chicken versions, and curry sauce goes with either chips or chow mein. Payment is cash only, so bring cash to the counter. The shop opens in the evenings only and is closed on Tuesdays.

Customer Review Summary
Reviews split sharply, and the most frequent draw is the chow mein, praised by some for fresh, hot food and criticised by others as soggy and salty. Positive reviewers single out a combination order with seaweed and prawn toast, and a huge portion of chips with mushrooms, onions and curry sauce, and several describe friendly, quick staff and reasonable value. One regular says they have been going for years. Complaints are heavier on the other side. One reviewer says the pork chow mein was mushy with fatty pork, the fried rice and barbecue sauce were intensely salty, and a spring roll contained sausage. Another describes a chow mein with a urine-like smell and a battery-heavy fish that was mostly batter, though the business refunded both dishes. One reviewer reports being sick overnight after a fish and peas order. Others mention a polystyrene container that leaks chow mein sauce, and an order forgotten twice. Cash-only payment frustrated two reviewers, one of whom wished for a card machine.

“Me and my partner visited this place today I purchased fish and chips and a sausage and my partner purchased the special chow mein and curry sauce. The fish was one of the worst fish I’ve ever had. You would find better out of a Birdseye store packet from Iceland. It was awful 90% batter and 10% fish. It looked like the bottom of my crock how they can sell that to customers is crazy. The sausage was fine, but let’s be honest. How can you mess up a sausage? It’s very simple. It wasn’t the best sausage, but it was passable. My partner’s chow mein stank the house out with a strange urine like smell. We tried a little bit and it was vile. It all went in the bin. It was truly disgusting and wasn’t worth the risk to eat it. The smell that came off it was putrid. If you are going to order anything from her limit it to chips that’s the only safe option we will not be returning however upon reading other reviews others have had food poisoning and I’m not surprised when their food smells like that something clearly isn’t right. I do respect their service, however because when I returned and complained, they did refund me for the chow mein and the fish. But paying £21 for the only bit of food you’re eating was sausage and chips is crazy thankfully they refunded it but regardless avoid this place”

“Was served quickly by a friendly little lass. Ordered chips with mushrooms, onions and curry sauce. Think it was only £4 something. The portion size was huge. So tasty, great value. Will definitely go there again when I'm next in salford.”

“Food was decent, we ordered quite a lot of stuff and it was all fresh and hot. My only issue is the container they put the chicken chow mein in - its one of them polystyrene ones which isn't suitable as all the sauce leaks out of it and ends up everywhere, I noticed this the first time I ordered from here and thought it was a one off but clearly not, but apart from that all good 👍🏻”
