About Wilbutts Lane Chippy

Wilbutts Lane Chippy is a fish and chips takeaway at 56 Willbutts Lane in Rochdale, set in a row of terraced houses in a building that looks like a former living room. It stands next to Rochdale AFC's Spotland Stadium, at the Willbutts Lane end, so football fans can stop in before a match, and the counter is used to handling them on match days. The menu centres on haddock and chips with mushy peas. Rag puddings and potato scallops are also on the menu, and fritters and fish cakes come with chips. Service is walk-in. Gravy and curry sauce are served alongside the chips.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the fish and chips, describing white, fresh haddock under a light, crispy batter, alongside thick, crispy chips. Close behind are the mushy peas, called thick and made in-house by one diner, and the gravy, described as thick and smooth with a beef flavour. Others mention the rag pudding, potato scallops, fritters and fish cakes. Many call it an old school, proper chippy on a terraced row, with friendly staff, a spotless interior, generous portions for the price and quick service. Several are football fans who say the shop handles pre-match crowds well. A minority disagree. One reviewer calls it overpriced with a miserable owner. Another reports the smallest fish they have ever seen, hard unsalted peas, greasy chips and overly thick gravy and curry sauce. One away fan, welcomed at the door, settled for a fish cake and chips.

“I must be missing something here me with all these 5* reviews 🤷‍♂️ It's a big standard chippy, overpriced and pretty expensive compared to others but guess next to football ground they gonna charge more which is a shame. And the owner isn't really the most pleasant guy now is he, pretty miserable. Overall I'd pick somewhere else but convenience for the match I'll get a pie inside the ground next time. Disappointed”

“Me and my brother went in a few minutes ago and the service was excellent with the workers being helpful and positive. The food is cheaply priced and yet tastes brilliant and the shop looks sleek and clean. Overall 5*👍👍👍👍”

“Best chippy I've been to in a long time. Small but clearly well rehearsed in handling football fans pre-match. No rip off prices either. Friendly staff, delicious food”

“I had been told many times to get out to Rochdale and visit this chippy, and that I wouldn’t be disappointed. Well, they were right. I wasn’t disappointed at all. I loved it. There’s nothing pretentious about the place whatsoever. It sits on a terrace row and is spotlessly clean and tidy. The staff were all super friendly and polite, and I had a great chat with the owner. Now to the all-important food. I ordered haddock and chips, with the fish being beautifully white and fresh, coated in a light, crispy, tasty batter. The chips were plentiful and exactly what you’d expect from an incredible chippy: thick, crispy, with delicate centres. The gravy was thick and super smooth, with a lovely beef flavour that wasn’t overpowering. The mushy peas were just how I like them, thick, made in-house, and subtly seasoned. The potato scallops were prepared and cooked to perfection, not oily at all. I also had a rag pudding, with a deliciously rich meat and gravy interior wrapped in soft, tasty suet pastry. Overall, don’t even think about driving by, call in to this great little chippy. 🟠 Cooking in: Oil 🟠 Payment: Cash or Card 🟠 Fish Reviewed: Haddock 🎥 See the full video review on The Chippy Tour YouTube channel”

“Very poor quality. Smallest fish I’ve ever seen in my life. Hard unsalted peas. Greasy chips. Gravy and curry sauce thick as you like. Anyone that thinks this is a good chippy needs to visit mother Hubbards.”
