About Hare & Hounds

On Bury Road in Rochdale, the Hare & Hounds is a Thwaites brewery pub that opens daily and serves food every day. The kitchen cooks cheese and onion pie and rag pudding, and the Sunday roast comes with broccoli and cauliflower cheese. The bar pours Thwaites Gold among two regular cask ales and a guest, with bitters, lagers, wines and cocktails alongside. The dining area has a fire, and staff serve drinks at the bar. Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return most for the cheese and onion pie, praised as "fab" and "so good" alongside the rag pudding, with the gammon also singled out as good. Steak Thursday earns a superb, well-cooked steak from one diner, and Sunday dinner is called lovely with broccoli and cauliflower cheese included. Close behind is the beer, with Thwaites Gold, real bitters and a cask ale lineup described as a pleasure to drink, and bar staff who serve within moments. Several call the staff friendly, chatty and helpful, and the outdoor seating and prices draw praise. The food is not consistent for everyone. One group found two of four steaks full of grizzle, and another reviewer got a Sunday roast at 6pm with only peas and cauliflower instead of the advertised trimmings, plus rock hard roast potatoes. One reviewer found the vegetarian options limited, and another felt the background music made conversation across two tables difficult. One reviewer says Friday and Saturday nights get busy and suggests booking a table.

“Nice food and the service is quick. The young lady who served us was very chatty and smiley and advised on the dishes. The only critism is the vegetarian options are limited, but we still found something we enjoyed We will be returning.”

“The food here is so so so so good! Especially the rag pudding and cheese and onion pies! Gets quite busy on Friday and Saturday nights so best to book a table.”
  • Claire Allsop
“Visited tonight at 6pm - six ladies at two tables near the fire. Very helpful young man, Sam, waited on our table - very patient and professional. Very impressed by his service. The food was hit n miss - the cheese n onion pie was good, as was the gammon; two out of the four steaks were good but sadly two were full of grizzle. Despite this, we enjoyed our visit. Nice atmosphere, though we felt the background music was a little loud and made conversation difficult across the two tables.”
